I am sewing on "WeatherMax" fabric (making golf flags) - an outdoor, lightweight, material; in the wind my fabric is fraying and splitting. Was it the needle? Is it the fabric? is it the machine? Did I cut it out in the wrong direction?I have tried all kinds of needles to no avail! I have thread at 182 m..... I have completed 54 flags that will all need repair! What do I now? I have been sewing for over 50 years! The fabric is not heavy - but is man-made not natural. They say it will even make great boat covers. I have made boat covers out of Sunbrella before on a Kenmore machine ... I don't understand why my this is happening. Plese help if you can. thanks.

First, why are you using a plastic/coated fabric for flags? I would suggest ripstop nylon, as it's easier to sew and holds up to the wind nicely. Are you hemming or binding the flags? If not & that is where your problem is..I would use a plastic adhesive on the edges.
I use ripstop, and hem any flags & banners I've made.
Weathermax is a plastic, you are most likely breaking threads in the fabric when sewing it...maybe a ballpoint needle will help? I haven't sew with the Weatherstop fabric.
There is a website that is a dealer for Weathermax...they have a contact email there...http://www.bruinplastics.com/weathermax.html

PS...When I make my flags/banners using ripstop nylon, I also do applique for the letters/numbers...works great using just a zig zag stitch to secure them.

Hi. Interesting problem. For outdoor materials (and advise on sewing on outdoor materials) I rely on Sailrite (http://www.sailrite.com/) and interestingly, couldn't find Weathermax fabric on their site. I would contact their forum (http://forum.sailrite.com/) and ask the question there. Matt Grant (I think he runs the sewing part of the forum) is extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Sorry I don't have anything more for you,

Robbie

Garage Sale Sewing Machines

Before you get a sewing machine for $25 at a garage sale, make sure it truly sews.
You will need to bring thread, scrap material, and a pair of scissors. (I bring a couple types of pre-wound bobbins and a needle.) First, does it have all the parts? Bobbin case, bobbin, cord, foot pedal? Are the cords frayed, or the plugs broken? Will the owner let you plug it in? Are you able to thread it and wind the bobbin? Does it make a stitch in the straight stitch AND zig zag modes? If any of these are no, walk away. Use that $25 to save towards a quality new machine, or wait for another garage sale.

Why is the Material not moving smoothly. Have to pull it

Try setting the stitch length to a longer stitch. Increasing the stitch length should move the material faster. Also, make sure that the presser foot pressure is not to heavy. This shows up sometimes when you change fabric thicknesses (denim vs lightweight sheer) and the machine has difficulty moving the fabric. Try stitching on different fabric and see if it makes a difference. Also, if the material you are stitching is somewhat sticky, it will stick to the bottom of the presser foot (this is common when sewing vinyl, leather, etc.) If that is the case, you may want to check into getting a leather roller foot (it has wheels built into the presser foot that will turn as the fabric is pulled through by the feed dogs).

How to set singer machine for strechy fabric

Hello, Most often if the machine sews fine on a regular material, cotton, denim, ect.....then the material...in this case "stretchy" is moving up and down with the needle...this is called "flagging" the material moves ever so slightly and this cause the hoop that the hook would pick up to be either not the right size or just a fraction out of line with the travel of the hook. On most industrial machines you can increase the presser foot pressure and cure it. From time to time the size of the hole in the middle of the presser foot can allow movement... so you might try applying a sturdy tape or material to the under side of the foot in order to reduce the hole side.

Hope this helps!!

I have a Pfaff Creative 1475 CD. It only skips stitches on stretch materials. I have tried a ballpoint and stretch needle and it still skips stitches. It sews a 100% correctly on any other type of...

There are a couple things you can do that may help. 1. Float some lightweight paper under the fabric. Sew through the material and the paper. Then tear away the paper.

Secondly make sure you are using a long enough stitch.

If none of these things work.... take it in and have an example of the skipping. Have the machine's timing checked.

Janome 7061NX pulls fabric into bobbin at beginning

I use a piece of tissue or thin paper to start the seam/zigzag. I've always thought the problem occurred most when I used llight weight or 'ravel prone' fabrics. I also took extra time to cut, not tear, the tissue off because the strenght of the tissue on delicate or fraying fabrics will literally pull the threads and fabric apart--a big problelm.

Sometimes I just got lazy and straight stitched a 1/2 inch until the fabric's vulnerable corner was firmly over the base plate. Then I changed to zigzag.

What causes the bottom stitch to look like it's catching the material when I sew?

try changing the needle--flat side to the back of the machine
the needle & thread & fabric have to be compatable
light weight fabric requires a different needle than medium to heavy weight fabric
if you do not have a manual check with bernina customer service about one
or
sewing partsonline.com
try a top tension of 3 or 4
clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for loose thread or lint

Trying to sew light indoor outdoor material (zig/zag stitch) keeps getting tangled in the feed dogs and needle keeps sticking in the material from the top. It is mangling my fabric.

What size needle are you using? You should be using at least a #14 or #16. A #11 is too light duty. Try that and see if it doesn't make a difference.

I keep breaking needles

Are you trying to sew a zig-zag stitch with a straight stitch foot so the needle is striking the foot? Or is it an issue of the material being very thick?

I just googled this machine and it looks pretty lightweight so perhaps you are expecting it to sew fairly heavy materials such as jean seams and it is struggling to do this.

Also keep in mind that you should select a needle appropriate for the sewing job, so 60 or 70 for chiffon and lightweights, 90 for medium weights, 110 for heavy weight and use ball point needles for stretch fabrics.

Hope this helps a bit.

I need to know how to set the tension. I need to know how to thread the bobbin. I need to know if the needle makes a difference. My stitches are loose and sloppy. They should be interlocking between...

Would be helpful to know what model machine you have.
A new machine should not need tension adjustment, so guessing it is not being threaded correctly. There should be adequate instruction on how to do this and how to wind a bobbin in the manual.
The main thing is you need to have the presser foot UP when you thread the top thread. This opens the tension discs so the thread will go between the discs and be put under tension once the presser foot goes down before you sew. When you thread the bobbin, be sure it is unspooling in the correct direction and that it clicks into its tension slot. A Universal 80 needle will do for 95% of what you sew, exceptions being very lightweight fabric, knitted fabrics, or very heavyweight fabric.
Write a reply back to Fixya if this does not help you, but include more detail on just exactly which machine you have.
