Carefully pry the chrome ring from the gearhead of the mixer. Item 28 on this page :

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%208212369.pdf

You will find 5 screws under the chrome ring. Tighten them and the oil (grease) will stop leaking from the gasket which seals the gearcase halves.

It has been brought to my attention that on some models removing the ring does not completely expose the screw heads. On my machine I was able to access the screw heads without removing anything else, however you may need to remove the rotating part to access the screws. Todo this you simply drive the pin from the drive shaft and remove the planetary housing (#33) to gain complete access to the screw heads.

SMEG Stand Mixer makes loud clanging noise only when there is an attachment on.

The machine needs stripping down as something it likely worn. The gearbox is also packed with grease and may need re-packing. They do need periodic servicing. Does it make the same noise with the bowl removed? Sometimes the noise will be attachments hitting the bowl. There is an adjustment screw underneath to see clearance.

KitchenAid K5SS Stand mixer motor runs and attachments spin, but there is barely any torque. You can stop the paddle with your hand.

In the days before electronic speed controls, speed reduction was by a number of series resistors and at low speed there was a lack of torque. Professional mixers overcame the problem by using a multiratio gearbox that wouldn't disgrace a motorcycle or a small car.

Electronic speed control allowed speed feedback so when a load is applied and the motor slows, more current would be supplied tending to maintain the speed - not perfect by any means but usually much more efficient than the old system. I don't know the precise details how the system works but I expect that is where the fault is.

Oil in mixing bowl during operation from motor head

there is 6 oz of a food safe lubricant in the motor housing that is held in by a gasket around the front of the gear housing in the top of the mixer, the gasket is leaking the separated liquid of the grease. The grease because it is a vegetable based product separates over periods of non use and the gasket gets soaked and releases the liquid into parts of your mixer and it drips it's way out when you use it. the best thing to do is install a new gasket and remove the old grease then repack and add a new gasket. There wasn't that easy?? problem is that most people don't know where to buy the KA approved grease and gasket (ebay about 17.00) and most people don't know how to take their mixer apart to do this, (youtube has about four really good step by step videos on how to do it) BUT!!!! there is a trick that often works, seriously!!! get a towel and spread it on an open work space, grab your significant other or any one that will tolerate you when you get this way you will need their hand. Now turn the mixer upside down (no I'm not being sarcastic) turn it upside down, now have your partner hold it while you reach down and plug it in and turn it to speed Two, and hold the mixer like that for two minutes, (that's why it's better to have a really good friend help you they won't tell you how nuts you are doing this, but!! continue. After two minutes turn the mixer off and turn it right side up and turn it on again for two minutes, then do it all over again upside down then right side up, do this at least three times. the drip is now fixed. You think I'm nutz right??? Wrong!!! What you have done is re-mix the gear grease, the liquids are now re-mixed with the solids or gear grease base material. It should last about a year or so. My suggestion is to do this once or twice a year if you are not going to use the mixer for long periods of time. The separation usually happens when the mixer goes for long periods of time without use. the grease is designed to work for five or ten years without being replaced. however the gasket is made of fiber and the weight of the motor head pressing down on it for a few years of say 17 pounds causes it to compress and allow the liquids to leak out. So to fix that you take of the drip ring off (round silver thing that attaches to the planetary ) then drive out the little silver pin in the planetary shaft and pry off the planetary. you will then see five flat head screws that hold the motor head to the lower gear case, thightem them up and re-assemble the mixer then remix the grease, you have fixed your drip problem without spending a dime and it will stay fixed for years as long as you have no other issues arise during it's life. Hope that helps you.

KitchenAid stops working when anything other than liquid is in the bowl..

There is a non metal gear inside the motor head that is stripped and no longer engaging the worm drive. What happens when you try to assist the turning process (try it only on stir speed, sloooowwwww) if it starts to turn and then stops again then it is the gear I spoke of. It will require tearing down the machine, cleaning all old grease, to insure that you have no ground up parts in the grease, then replace the grease gasket and gear. Hope this helps

Mixer is leaking oil from were attachment go

Inside the gear housing there is a ton of grease. When the machine is used too many time or ran for an extended time the grease will degrade and become runny that's why it leaks. Open your motor up and replace the new grease. This should take care of it. Replacementparts.com has some great videos on how to fix kitchenaid stand mixer. Here is the video on how to change the grease.

The top of the mixer began shaking and thumping when running, I realized the tilt head is pressed forward a little too far, causing the basic mixing attachment to press too far down into the bowl, maybe by...

Tip the machine upside down on a towel, centralise the hinge pin and tighten the grub screw that locks it into place. This is right up inside the pedestal, there is only one screw there to see.
Now stand it up and fit the mixing bowl & flat paddle, turn the machine on speed one, if the paddle is tinging on the bowl then we now need to set the head height. Turn the motor off.
Raise the motor up and from the front of the machine look in by where the motor hinges on the pedestal. You can see one screw head there. If it's tinging the bowl then you need to turn the screw anti clockwise enough so that the paddle no longer tings on the bowl.
Once it's stopped tinging put it onto max speed and make sure it still clears at high speed, if not turn the screw until it stops tinging. That's it.

First and second gears seem stuck

You most likely broke a keyway on page 14, item 36.

http://www.hobartlink.com/extranet/extranetmanualsandcatalogs.nsf/57866D624A678E7385256CB0007232DA/$File/F-19357%20(05-95).pdf

The unit is filled with grease, and is not as easy as it may seem. Being that a grease change is likely needed, it's about three hours work for a trained tech.

K45 started smoking while mixing cookie dough

There is the possibility that if the mixer is 30 years old and it has never been serviced that the gasket around the gear case is leaking oil and in that case it would not be hard to get liquids on the armature or the stator as the gear grease in the transmission is vegetable base grease and it separates into liquids and solid and when the head is tilted up the failed gasket allows the separated oil to leak down and to the rear onto the mixer right onto the motor parts. It maybe nothing more that cleaning out all the old grease and re-packing and adding a new gasket.
