This will usually occur when windows crashes when attempting to do a shutdown and there is a setting to start on crash. Lets stop that first, then find out why. (since you didn't specify your OS, were assuming XP)

Start menu>right click "my computer" > properties > advanced tab > under "Startup and recovery" click setting button> uncheck "automatically restart"

Now we will turn off programs to identify what is hanging you system. (this is just one method)
Start button > run box > type msconfig.
uncheck everything > apply > shutdown
restart and shutdown again. If it begins shutdown correctly, then you know it is one of these programs. If not, then there may be a bad service or other program that is hanging the system.

If these don't work, Press ctrl+alt+delete to open task manager. Turn off programs one by one. Only the programs with your username, not "System"
Please provide feedback, with what you find.

Hi, i have an APC UPS with model BE 500R PH how to bypass the auto shutdown of it?

On mine, until an electrical storm, was controlled through my computer via USB. Now, it shuts down in 5 seconds. I'm sure it's the thermistors, but I don't have time. Also, check for timing circuits.
tip

Create One-Click Shutdown and Reboot Shortcuts:

First, create a shortcut on your desktop by right-clicking on the desktop, choosing New, and then choosing Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard appears. In the box asking for the location of the shortcut, type shutdown. After you create the shortcut, double-clicking on it will shut down your PC.
But you can do much more with a shutdown shortcut than merely shut down your PC. You can add any combination of several switches to do extra duty, like this:
shutdown -r -t 01 -c "Rebooting your PC" Double-clicking on that shortcut will reboot your PC after a one-second delay and display the message "Rebooting your PC." The shutdown command includes a variety of switches you can use to customize it. Table 1-3 lists all of them and describes their use.
I use this technique to create two shutdown shortcuts on my desktop—one for turning off my PC, and one for rebooting. Here are the ones I use:
shutdown -s -t 03 -c "Bye Bye m8!" shutdown -r -t 03 -c "Ill be back m8 ;)!"
Switch What it does
-s Shuts down the PC.
-l Logs off the current user.
-t nn Indicates the duration of delay, in seconds, before performing the action.
-c "messagetext" Displays a message in the System Shutdown window. A maximum of 127 characters can be used. The message must be enclosed in quotation marks.
-f Forces any running applications to shut down.
-r Reboots the PC.

How do i reboot my computer

Hi,

To reboot the desktop machine, kindly press the power on button for few seconds / small button(reset) below the power button to reboot the computer.

If its laptop follow the below steps

Determine what operating system it uses. Finding out what operating system your laptop uses will let you know what key combo (such as "Ctrl+Alt+Delete") can exit you from usage and trigger a reboot or shutdown.

Try and reboot using the operating system. Attempt to use the key combination that will allow you to exit from the operating system and restart the laptop. Be patient, as it may take some time if it has locked up.

Hold down the power button. If the operating system's answer to the rebooting will not work, find and hold down the power button of the laptop. This should cause the device to shut itself off. You'll have to press the power button again to power it back on, completing the reboot.

Unplug from the wall and remove the battery. If restarting via the operating system and the power button do not work, unplug the laptop from the wall outlet, and remove the battery from the laptop. This will cause it to power off immediately.

Allow time to reboot. Give the laptop time to cool down before you power it back on if you had to do this manually. A few seconds should do unless you have additional problems.

I want to restart or reset my laptop. how?

Hi,

Few steps to restart you laptop, I would suggest not to restart often since it will degrade the hardware resource.
  • Determine what operating system it uses. Finding out what operating system your laptop uses will let you know what key combo (such as "Ctrl+Alt+Delete") can exit you from usage and trigger a reboot or shutdown.
  • Try and reboot using the operating system. Attempt to use the key combination that will allow you to exit from the operating system and restart the laptop. Be patient, as it may take some time if it has locked up.
  • Hold down the power button. If the operating system's answer to the rebooting will not work, find and hold down the power button of the laptop. This should cause the device to shut itself off. You'll have to press the power button again to power it back on, completing the reboot.
  • Unplug from the wall and remove the battery. If restarting via the operating system and the power button do not work, unplug the laptop from the wall outlet, and remove the battery from the laptop. This will cause it to power off immediately.
  • Allow time to reboot. Give the laptop time to cool down before you power it back on if you had to do this manually.
Else Try:

Windows start > there's a small arrow(pointing RIGHT) in the left bottom > click it and u will get ALL the Power House Options there at your Click(sleep, hibernate, shut down,RESTART,....)

How do I reboot my acer laptop with my copy disk?

When turning your laptop on, before Windows starts booting, a splash screen appears first (usually with the logo of the manufacturer). Look on the splash screen (usually at the bottom) for a key (usually F10 or F11), assigned for System Recovery CD/DVD with the laptop. or 1.Press the start button from the start menu depending on your operating system(win 2000,xp) 2.Press Ctrl+Alt+delete combination from the keyboard. 3.If you have a power button on your laptop keyboard,it could also be useful by pressing and hold it down for few seconds N.B: "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" can exit you from usage and trigger a reboot or shutdown. How do i reboot an acer laptop

Reboot is another term for restart.
You can shut the system off, and then turn it back on again after a few seconds.
Or you can have the operating system do it for you, using the restart option instead of the shutdown (turn off) option.

Can not save to bios

windows and the bios needs to know that the operating system can be shut down through windows, so when you go into the F2 or Del on boot up, go into advanced cmos setings and look for ACPI and make sure it is enabled. This sets the motherboard to support shutdown. Save and exit settings and reboot. Now go to control panel>performance and maintanance>power options and set the correct instruction for shutdown to shut the pc down. Remember evertime you remove the cmos battery or reset with jumpers you have to reset date and time and anything else you have changed to suit your set up
