Fan Error message but the fan's working on another machine

Hey!

I have an ibm T42 thinkpad notebook. Recently, its given me the ‘fan error message at the top left corner of my screen. Its shutting down just after I boot it. I’ve read a number of forums on the fan error issue. Anyway, I have another thinkpad (T29 – which has its own issues by the way) so I took the fan from the T42 and tried it on the T29 – its running smoothly. I then tried running the fan from the T29 on the T42….it didnt run. coz of this, im not entirely certain that my problem has to do with the fan.

I’m considering shelving the T42 till I can get another notebook but I dont want to coz I really love the notebook i was using.

Help someone before I empty my pockets unnecessarily

One option would be to replace the motherboard. You can use one from T40 -T43 with your monitor. I bought one on Ebay for $90 which came with the board installed to the bottom plastic tray. I only had to install my monitor, memory, keyboard, hard drive, & plastic bezel and I had a good working unit for $90.

Fan error displace on my t42 ibm.I noticed the fan is working but the error do come once in a while thereby prevent the pc from working

If the fan is running but your notebook still overheats, your computer will turn itself off, and you need to wait until it cools down

The question is, why is it overheating? Try using a vacuum cleaner close to the ventilation slots to suck out any dust.

If this does not solve the problem, please get back to me

My ThinkPad T42 cooling fan works slow... i feel like air flow is very slow when i touch the vents... i opened the laptop and checked the fan and it was really slow.. what should i do now please help......

You should replace the fan if it is defective.

You can check inside your Bios or System Setup to see if there are any options on controlling the fan. If the laptop is not giving you any error messages or overheating the fan might be ok.

IBMThinkpad BIOS Beep Codes: Beeps/Error Description Continuous beeping System board failure
Try reseating the RAM module/s and if you still get this bep code then the RAM may be faulty.
Remove the RAM module/s and take it to a computer repair shop and ask them to test the RAM for you.

Cleaning the fan may help. I use a vacuum cleaner and hold the pipe against the air inlet of the computer and then against the exhaust outlet. That clears the fluff quite easily.
Hope this helps.

IBM T42 gave fan error, replaced and can not get it to reboot

make sure the fan is pluged in correctly and you didnt unplug anything else such as memory or etc or bump the cpu... did you put any thermal paste on the cpu when you put the fan on it? its needed to bond the too together to make a better cooling system there maybe a setting in your bios to disable fan monitoring or cpu temp etc have to look at your bios to see

IBM T42 gives Fan Error message and stops

The fan may be faulty or clogged with dust.
Check the fan to see f it spins freely and remove dust from the heatsink fins and fan assembly.

The specification in the manual for the T40 series shows the largest hard drive is 80 Gb.
It may be possible to install a larger hard drive, but check with Lenevo first.

IBM Lapyop T42-message"Fan errors" does not turn on

your cooling fan is reporting as damaged you need to replace the fan unit (cooling pad as well) likely service is required and unless you want to disassemble your laptop a service center would be better suited for this job.
