Hi,
You may need to update the BIOS as the 131070 represents a common drive size limitation.
If you want some assistance locating a BIOS update or verifying if that model can support drives greater than 120GB comment back with the Acers full model number ie AS5050-XXXX
I can make a quick check and let you know.

Hello again,
I went for a quick dig in the Acer site but it's actually down for maintenance tonight, I will try again in the morning and report back
Ok,
Acers site is up and running again this morning and they do have a Bios upgrade available. There''s no notes specifying what it updates so we don't know if it will address the issue but it should be worth a try. One word of warning, although BIOs upgrades routinely work, they can fail and Acer will not warranty issues caused by failed BIOS upgrades.
Keep the power plugged in while performing the upgrade and follow each step with patience. Install from safe mode with no virus scanner loaded for best odds of success. You can download the BIOS update from the link below.
http://www.acer.ca/acer/service.do?Langu...
If the link doesn't work, go to www.acer.com, pick your country then select Service & Support from the country page. Select Driver Downloads, then pick, NoteBook=>Aspire=>Aspire 5050
This will bring up the driver list. There is a tabbed menu at the top of the list, click the BIOS tab and download the 2008 version of your BIOS.
Save the file somewhere easy to find like your desktop then reboot in safe mode(restart and beat on F8 until a black and white menu appears and select Safe Mode). Double click the file and follow the onscreen instructions.

No problem,
I deal with all brands of laptop and the problems are more or less the same on all of them.
As for the BIOS update, it's always a bit risky, personally I would just format the drive as a 120GB and play it safe if you can live without the extra space. If you really need the space I might go for it, but then be prepared to buy a new laptop if it fails(about 5% chance).
Glad to be of help,

No, when u install a partition on a hdd it will not show when u scan for disk size from windows as the partitions are seperated to keep it safe from many common issues. it looks like you may have installed windows again once it was in the new computer or just allocated additional space to the partition......dont worry, if your hdd gets full, windows will suggest to automatically slim down the partition for you
good luck and pls rate this post!!!!!! :D

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA
the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electic extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
hope this helps

Photo impact pro as a software has compatibility requirements. For example, impact pro was invented during the times of windows Xp operating systems with Microsoft computers. Imply that, impact pro would hardly function with apple Mac computers. Since the Xp operating systems, computers have gone through design fronts of Windows Vista 1 & 2, and recently displaying Windows 7 on those acquired on the market over years ago. The most recent multimedia photo editor software's acquirable on the retail market have compartibilies with more recent computers. Alternately, performing a computer alteration may achieve installation capabilities. First, finding a computer still functioning on windows XP, millennium, 2000 or 1998 would make installation possible. However, sustain wearsomeness since windows 98 earlier years computers were least designed for multimedia capabilities as known with Photo Impact Pro 8.5. Second, a possibility of acquiring Windows Xp disk software on the retail market to replace the one on the computer would make impact pro installable. However like known of operating system software's, it is only possible to install the same operating system on an existing one on a computer as restoration purposes. If different software should be acquired like XP requesting installation on windows Vista or Windows 7, the entire hard disk drive has to be erased of media traces of the prior. Alerternately, a new operating system may be installed if only a new hard drive, memory cards were acquired to replace the prior on the computer to make possible installation of Photo Impact pro 8.5

I just realized that you wanted the Model number, not the Serial number... kinda brain-dead after trying to figure this out. The model is AS5050-5554. I went to the Acer web site and sent for e-mail support although not sure if they'll give it as it was an old machine out of warranty. I couldn't find any BIOS updates on the site. Thanks again for your help.
Just to add... I can create a partition with the full size (almost 160GB) on a Vista machine but not on the Acer. The Acer can only create a 130GB partition. Fortunately, it can read the 160GB partition the Vista machine created. Not sure if it's the BIOS or the Windows XP Pro installer software that's the problem.
Hi Crankstart... Thanks for the link. I guess I had missed the BIOS tab when I looked at that page. (Don't like those kind of formats especially for printing.) I downloaded it but still thinking whether or not I should do it, especially considering Acer's response yesterday. They said that they recommend only the original configuration (ie. 120GB hard drive). They didn't mention the BIOS but did try to upsell me by saying they offer out of warranty service, at a cost of course. Your really know your stuff... thanks so much.

Hi Crankstart...
I can use an external drive for my data. So it's probably best to leave well enough alone. It's an old laptop which I use to Skype home to make sure it's OK when I'm away. Thanks again and best wishes.
