I have a Bernina 830, the older original one which is not computerized. My zig-zag does not engage. When I turn the knob selector, it turns and the needle does move back and forth. But when I sew the needle remains stationary. I am wanting to make buttonholes, but need the zig-zag function. There is a lever on the top of the machine that moves into several positions choosing various embroidery stitches. I used it one day and when I put it back in the forward position it quit working. There were no problems using the lever at the time. Usuallly the machine either sews straight, or does the zig zag when the zig zag knob on the front of the machine is turned to the right. Do you have any ideas?

If your machine has not been professional serviced recently or you have not cleaned and oiled it lately, then you might refer to your owner's manual instructions for oiling. I would suspect that perhaps the oil has hardened and is preventing the machine from operating properly--perhaps some of the selector lever/dial mechanics are not moving internally. Use liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil (usually available at the hardware store) and put a drop or two every place that the manual recommends. Direct a hot hair-dryer into the internal works of the machine. (I usually let it get pretty warm to the touch - but make sure to stop periodically because your hair dryer may overheat.) Test your machine. If you can determine that the selector lever/dial mechanics are not moving, you can try putting a drop or two of oil in its metal joints and working it gently back and forth to loosen. Depending on how hardened the oil has become, you may have to repeat oil/hair-dryer process several times before things loosen up. Once it is working again, be sure to clean and oil regularly. (I recommend a good quality oil, ie Bernina oil for mechanical machines. It may seem expensive but it lasts a long time if you use only one or two drops each spot and, IMHO, is worth it in the long run. I do NOT recommend 3-in-1, WD-40, cooking oil, or the cheap sewing machine oil from fabric departments.) You have a wonderful machine and it will continue to serve you well if you treat it well. Suggest cleaning/oiling every time you change a bobbin, every 8 hours of continuous use, or every six months if it is not in regular use.

Take your machine in for service.

Bernina is the only brand that holds value and anything you try may damage the machine.

Take the machine to an authorized Bernina dealer for service.

Where is the feed dog lever on my bernina record 830 sewing machine

On the Bernina 830 Record (older mechanical model), it is usually the very bottom knob on the right side (directly below the Stitch Length Lever). It should turn right or left about a quarter turn to switch between feed dogs up or down. If the knob is frozen, then it has seized due to old dried oil (a common occurrence with older mechanical machines that have not been serviced regularly). Stuck feed dogs, stitch selectors, buttonhole knobs, and the handwheel are some of the most frequent victims of seizure. However, with lots of patience, time, fresh good quality sewing machine oil or liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube, elbow grease and a handheld hairdryer, these issues can usually be successfully addressed.

I have a bernina 730 and it does a fabulous straight stitch but it won't do zig zag or any ornamental stitches

Assuming this is the older mechanical Bernina 730 Record (not the new computerized model)...Sounds like your machine is seized due to dried oil.

I cant get my stitch Width Zig zag knob to turn om my bernina record 930. Any one have this problem?

Most likely because your machine has not been serviced (oiled & cleaned) in a long time and the old oil has turned to glue and seized. This is probably the most common problem with mechanical sewing machines. A mechanical sewing machine should be regularly maintained..ie every 40 hours of sewing use or at least every six months when not in use. You may want to take it to a Bernina service technician. Ask for a bottle of Bernina oil for CB hook machines and ask if they will show you how to oil it.

My Bernina 830 will not switch stitches. It says the number but shows straight stitch and sews straight stitch

Is it a new 830 computerized model or the older 830 Record mechanical?

If it is the 830 Record, it needs oiling--1-2 drops of good quality sewing machine oil (specifically concentrate on the stitch selector lever and oil the metal parts that move against other metal parts) Do NOT oil the cams, plastic gears, any rubber parts, ie belts, bobbin winder wheel.

The 6 built-in stitches (such as blind stitch, darning stitch, etc.) are not working, they only just do the basic zig zag stitch. Also the cams for decorative stitching do not work either. These are all...

I have the same model, have you turned the first knob on left, the stitch selector, to the stitch you want? Then turn the middle knob, the stitch width to "4". Use the colour guide marks shown in the little picture on left of the knobs so you are dialing up the right settings. So for the zig zag, elastic blind hem, scallop, overcasting and multi-stretch stiches, 1-6 on the diagram you'll be setting the left knob to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 respectively and the stitch width and length knobs to "green", you can vary the length and width to suit what you want.

Then for the cams, you need to set everything zero, turn stitch selector to 7, the cam setting. then turn the width to orange again (3-4) and the stitch lenth selector to the orange setting, right around the knob. This engages the "Elnagraph" the device under the flap on top of the machine to read the discs. Basically the green stitches the needle is swinging from side to side while the feed dogs move the fabric forward, making your zig zags, blind hems etc.
But when you engage the Elna graph, the machine matches stiches by moving the fabric "forward and backwards at certain times, while the needle does its thing from side to side. This is what makes elastic or stretchy type stitches because you are putting "stretch" into the seam by sewing forwards and backwards.

Please note: always turn your stitch width and length back to Zero BEFORE you make any changes to the left knob and select a new stitch as this saves on wear and tear to the moving parts in these wonderful machines.

I do hope this assists you and I haven't just told you stuff you already knew!

I need to raise the teeth on a Bernina sewing machine and I can't remember how to do it. Any help?

On the front of your machine, is there a knob that you turn for zig-zag/straight stiching and the other way for darning? There will be an icon showing the stitches

The darning selection will lower the feed dogs.

My machine Bernina 830 does not run.

Hi Rose Mary,

I'm assuming you are talking about the original Bernina 830 (their newest machine is also an 830!)

If you've not had your machine professionally serviced in awhile, it could be as simple as a good, thorough cleaning and adjusting. Your machine should be professionally serviced about every 1-2 years....not a bargain service that blows out the dust and puts oil on the hook, but a service that checks all the gears for wear, adjustments, hook timing, feed timing, grease for the gears (if required), removes lint build-up deep in the machine - very thorough.

There are various gears in the 830 that control these functions. It sounds as if one of the gears may be either broken or jammed. Unfortunately, unless you are trained in machine repair, this isn't something you should attempt. When gears are replaced or adjusted, generally the timing of the machine must be reset as well.

We would recommend that you take your Bernina to your nearest authorized Bernina dealer (they'll be trained on your specific machine and have easy access to any parts that may be needed).

If you do not know a dealer in your area, you can search on the Bernina website.

The original Bernina 830 was one of the greatest models Bernina has made and is well worth putting the money into keeping it running. Great machine!

Hope this helps narrow down what may be happening.

Happy stitching,
Kim & Linnette

Sewing Machine Problem

Check to see if the cam stack gear does not have a crack in it. The other problem is the cam engager lever is does not engage the cam stitches because it is gummy. To solve this, lift the lid and follow the lever to where it make contact, add a penetrant oil. More the lever back and forth as fast as you can and work the penetrating oil into the area. It should click back and forth and snap between the back and front V's. One is for the zig zag and straight stitches and the other is for all cam patterns. Once it is clicking and snapping back add regular oil. Thensew out your pattern stitches. If the machine binds then you could have a cracked cam stack gear and has to be change by a Bernina service center.
