The T42 has a bulit-in wireless network adapter and a LAN network card. T42s most likely have an Intel wireless card or less likely a Cisco wireless card.
Your wireless network adapter may have been disabled in the BIOS
and/or
The drivers for the wireless network controller has not been installed.

To check the network adapter go to the Control Panel, Click on System, click on Hardware Tab then Device Manager. Then scroll down and click on Network adapters. If you don't see your network controller or you see a yellow ? against Other devices for the Network controller. Then either it has been disabled and/or the driver was not installed.

To get the driver for the network controller you need to dowload it from the IBM/Lenovo WEB site their support/download page from a computer that has Internet access. Make sure you select your laptop model and the driver for your Windows version.
Install the driver and you then need to configure the wireless adapter to suit your wireless router settings before you can access the Internet.

This will help. Thanks please keep updated. please do rate the solution positively .Thank you for using Fixya

SOURCE: Where is the wireless switch located on the IBM

Unlike the newer laptops, the T42 doesn't have it's own wireless switch. So in order to get the wireless working, you need to also make sure that the Power Management driver and the Hotkey driver are installed as well.

Load the drivers in this order:

1) Power Management driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4GXPEG
2) Hotkey driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-68000
3) Wireless Driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70504
After downloading it, you must go into C>Drivers>Win>Wlanint and run the setup file from there.
4) Access Connections (Optional) - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4ZLNJB

My wireless was working on my T42 IBM last week. It is not working now. The only thing that happened in between is that I installed Microsoft Office. How can I get my wireless back? I get a message that I...

For most IBM ThinkPads, the shortcut key to activate wireless is Fn+F5. I am not so sure about this model, but you can try. If this doesn't help, check the Device Manager and make sure it's shown on the devices lists. By default wireless is activated once the driver is installed on almost all IBM ThinkPads. You problem could be driver corrupted or missing. The best resolution is reinstalling the driver so that it'll not fail. If the problem persists, then it could also be your wireless card failure. You better check it twice.

Good luck.
