I have the same problem as robgon52 dated 1/25/09. What was the recommendation to resolve? Was it new Philips XL-2400 lamp or replace power ballast or both? My Sony KDF-E50A10 picture/sound goes off after only being on a few minutes. The power/standby LED blinks green 45-50 times. Then, the picture/sound will come back then turn off. The power/standby LED will blink green 45-50 times again. I can hear the fan on.

You would need to test the voltage coming to the ballast which depending on the ballast should be at least 320V but nothing higher than 370V maybe even 380V? (if someone know the exact please post)
CAUTION DO NOT TEST THE POWER GOING FROM BALLAST TO THE LAMP ITSELF (the ignition charge is too much ~15kV)
I assume you tried a new original Philips lamp and that you replaced the lamp door cover correctly.
Cause of darker picture is lamp that has reached at end of its working life span and need to be replaced for brighter picture in tv. Replace lamp in tv to get problem solved. Thanks.
Lamp code XL-2400 is Sony part number F93087500 and it is available on http://www.partstore.com/. You may also decide to purchase the less expensive Philips Lighting lamp part number F93087500RL. Either will work for your television set.
Please make sure lamp cover is reinstalled securely after replacement of lamp in TV. If lamp cover is not fixed properly, TV wont power up and red light will start blinking.
no you should only replace a bulb with the one made for that brande t.v. you should put in a sony xl-2400 in your sony t.v. and yes you should get both housing and bulb in 1 i bought mine off ebay for about 116.00$ both lamp and housing very easy to replace good luck also if you have a sony kdf-42we655 or 50we655the lamp part # is xl-21oou or xl-2100
If the lamp is new it could be the ballast the one is supply high voltage for the lamp you can order that ballast from Sony
Check the lamp if is not damage any where
