You can switch to an
external monitor or data projector by two methods.
1. Connect the external
monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the
laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external
monitor.
2. If you power up the
laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by
pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and
model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD
screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn
key plus one of the function key a few times.
Here is a list of key
combinations for some of the laptops :-
IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7
HP and Compaq = Fn + F4
Toshiba = Fn + F5
ASUS and Dell = Fn + F8

if u change monitor . you came to know fault of monitor or cpu., if monitor works cpu is not woking properly..some itime we face same problem to creat by changining highgraphic. we can reduce graohic by using f8. re instiling xp we can solve that type of some problem.
Assuming that nothing is electronically wrong with the IBM 9494, it should work with the old monitor cable (VGA) as well as the old monitor power cord.
I would first verify your system power settings (in Windows XP go to control panel, power options, then verify that nothing is set that could activate your monitor to a standby mode) - other versions of windows have something very similar. If all of these settings are correct, then unless the monitor is not working as required when switched on, i would recommend just leaving it be, possibly just take the time to unplug the monitor power lead instead of just switching it off.
If however you feel you must fix this problem, try:

for this model of monitor you will need the serial or FRU number in order to define the exact model.
