The ignition switch has likely had moisture in it and corroded the contacts for the engine kill circuit. I picked the epoxy off the back side of the switch to expose the screw heads, then disassembled and cleaned and greased the contacts. Works like a charm now. (Note I had to do similar service for the switches on the rear hatch as they were intermittent)
I have a 1998 Exciter with the same problem and the engine was replaced last year. Any answers yet?
