What is the make and model of your unit? Without know this we have to guess on the control device which leads to bad solutions.
If the unit will turn off with the thermosstat it is not the PTC relay as noted previously by "applianceser"
What does the frost pattern on the evaporator plate look like? Is it complete? (if this is a frost-free unit you won't be able to see the evaporator)
You say you replaced the thermstat...what type was it? Was it a sensing bulb/capillary tube style or and electrical/electronic device?
I was just going to post a clarification request but don't seem to have that option this time. Message me back with more info if you need more assistance and I'll continue to help you until I can no-longer provide any useful information. - Subdriver

does the compressor cycle(on & off) after it gets to your temp setting or does it run all the time,if so the ptc overload and relay are welded together and you need to remove it from the compressor body and replace it
