Dell Inspiron 6400 wont recognize new battery

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and the battery went out awhile ago. I bought a new one from either amazon.com or ebay.com and upon installing it I got a blue screen that I accidently clicked out of. I think it was telling me it didnt recognize either the battery or the charger. I just bought a new charger from Dell. My problem is the battery light flickers the whole time its plugged in and the battery does not charge. When I unplug it the computer turns completely off. How do I get my computer to recognize the new battery?

Well often batteries from 3rd party manufacturer do not work in some laptops, see even the batteries have a "Chip" in them identifying them. Also sometimes these batteries are just no-good. or arrive flat, too flat to be charged up via the supplied charger. Anyway hopefully none of that applies and this will work. Now Turn PC OFF, put battery in unit. Now plug in wall unit, then plug into the PC, now leave the PC totally alone for at least 3 hours. Now the unit should work. Now how we tell where the problem lies is like this, Turn OFF, take out battery, now plug in the wall adapter, now the PC should work Fine like this. Now remove wall adapter, and insert the battery, the unit should go on this.. ONLY of course if charged. Now if when plugged in there are problems, it is more than likely, that indeed the battery is faulty, in some way.
These links below detail what steps to take to remedy any situation. The 2nd link is great.

Why my dell inspiron 6400 battery not charging while plug in ,i have bought this one month ago

Every new Dell computer comes with a ONE-YEAR warranty.
Contact Dell, via telephone, and they will trouble-shoot your problem,
and will repair/replace any parts, to fix your problem.

No charge, during the first 12 months of ownership.

Hello..i recently purchased a new dell battery GD761/KD476 for dell inspiron 6400. But the problem is that the computer doesn't recognize the battery and says that it is not gonna charge the battery. Does...

Hi
I think the battery you bought is not compartible with your pc notebook that is why you are experiencing such problem. All you need to do is to get to the store or outlrt where you got the battery and get it replaced for a compartible battery or better still you should go along with your system.

Computer won't accept a compatible replacement battery for Dell Inspiron 6400

This could be due to a defective battery even though it is new. These batteries are what are called smart batteries. They have circuit boards mounted inside the battery pack that aids the computer in recognizing the battery as well as sending functional information to sensors in the laptop about battery health and performance. Try re-installing the old battery and see if it recognizes the old battery. if it does, the contact the company you purchased the battery from and let them know the problem. If the computer does not recognize the old battery anymore, there may be a problem with the charging circuit on the motherboard or the power adapter on the motherboard.

My Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop battery isn't charging, I think :(

Debby
Try booting without the battery installed. You probably will have no change but this eliminates the battery as a source of the problem. If it doesn't boot and you are sure that the external power supply is ok, you probably have a bad motherboard. At that point, the unit needs to be checked out by a pro or a really competent amateur.

DELL LAPTOP INSPIRON 6400 MY LAPTOP BATTERY IS SHOWING STATUS ( UNKNOWN ) ON WINDOWS & ON BIOS IT SAYSS BATTERY NOT INSTALLED

Here are my recommendations for this issue:

1. Reseat the battery.
2. Remove All External Components
3. Check the battery connectors on the battery and the system. Examine the connector on the battery and the system. Make sure that there is no physical damage and that it is clear of debris.
4. Remove All External Components
5. Try a known-good battery in the system, if available.

Dell inspiron 6400 Battery problem

what i would suggest is to check the bios there may be a new flash download on the dell website, my wife has a inspiron 1525, which is plugged in and says not charging, the battery will not go above 0%, but we have had to send it to dell (still under warranty) faulty motherboard. if the bios is up to date, there could be a hardware issue with the battery or motherboard

No battery charfging light.

While the notebook is TURNED OFF completely, try rubbing some isopropyl alcohol on the leads within the laptop that touch the battery with a cotton swab, could be that the leads are dirty.
