You can try cleaning the laser lens.
CAUTION!! The lens is delicate! I wipe DVD lenses with ONE drop of glasses cleaner on a Q-tip and, starting in the center, wipe in circles to the outside. Do not press down! Do not force the lens side to side. It will move while cleaning but don't put more pressure than needed to move the lens 3/4 way down!
Its a cheap test to see if there is a fingerprint on the lens. (You won't be able to see it - does not take much)
If this does not help, it means it needs a laser or worse. Probably just replace the player.

thanks for your reply. I opened the case (voided warranty) and a small piece of metal fell out (from where I couldn't tell). Anyway, put in a disc and everything worked. metal was square with rectangle hole and small notch one side. thanks again.

Check that the player supports the format and region of the dvd you are attempting to play, and be sure disk is clean and free of major scratches and scuffs.
