My Magnavox bluray disc player NB500MG9 will not play bluray dvds. Please help

I have a mb530mgx bluray player, bluray disc won`t play,, when I play a DVD it will freeze up and stop playing have to shut of player and start over and go to scene select on disc and start from where we left off for that dvd, what is wrong and what do I do,, I updated firmware and didn`t help

There are several reasons a disc may not play in the Blu-ray player. A dirty or scratched disc is the most obvious cause, but an incorrect region code or configuration of your home theater system can be the reason as well. My Blu-Ray will not play x disc
A Blu-ray player can play DVD or CD and still not play Blu-ray. It may play Blu-ray but not CD or DVD, or burned discs. This is all caused by the 'optical' a part that reads the disc in the machine. Your player will need service as a Blu-ray optic cannot just be 'dropped' into a player.

This fault is not with the firmware but with its Laser Pickup Unit itsef. In Blu-Ray players, there are two eam intensities for laser pickup unit, whic are independent to eacch other. One lower intesity beam is used for reading DVD/CD etc and the other is for reading Blu-Ray discs. Although these two beams are comes from the same laser pickup unit, they are generated from two different lased LEDs inside, and each will energize according to the disc we insert into it. In your set the lower intensity laser diode is faulty now. Therefore, the set will read and play Blu-Ray discs, but not others. Repalcement of the Laser Pickup Unit is the only way to rectify this problem. It will be best to get it repaired by the authorised service center for Magnavox, because; exact replacemt type is necessarey, and sometimes it will be difficult to get it from open electronic sparepart market. OK.

NB500mg1f won't play DVD, watched a movie last night on it and today it won't play the same movie !! Help before it grows wings !!!

Buy a cd/dvd lens cleaner they run about $8-$10 at the store. If that doesn't work the laser is probably bad.

How do I update my firmware? One site said I need to burn a CD-W with the latest firmware but, can I use the SD slot?

No. DVD firmware requires a CD-RW (to test the optic), the disc and file must be named according to the instructions. Power must not be disconnected from the unit during updates, do not push buttons or mess with the remote until the update is complete.

I think you mean you replaced the Blu-ray DISC. If the fault is there after the PLAYER is replaced, it would be the TV at fault...
This sounds like you need a firmware upgrade. Follow the directions on the maufacture's website exactly and do not disconnect power during the update or play with the remote.
