GE Fridge will not stop flashing zeros diagnostic

Water and ice dispenser worked every so often, had to unplug fridge once in a while to reset problem, last time I plugged it in it just goes to self-diagnostic mode with the flashing zeros and will not stop. Anybody knows how I can ''force quit'' the self test? Thanks!

I had the same problem. The cause is the digital display is not communicating with the motherboard. What had happened in my case is the plug connection between the door's digital display and the motherboard had become unplugged. The wire running from the motherboard runs below the fridge, and connects via plug located along the bottom of the fridge below the freezer door, connecting to the wire running from the display to the bottom of the freezer door. I just reconnected it and that reset the display. Glad for it too, I thought I needed a new $130 motherboard! Hope this helped!

Thank you for the post! I too thought that I needed a new motherboard. Unplugging and plugging back in the electrical connector below the freezer door got rid of the flashing zeroes and returned the display back to normal, and, more importantly, the dispenser started working again.

After already replacing the main computer and the display computer, I did this check and sure enough the wires were corroded. Cut out the plug and soldered the connections and it works great!

Awesome find here saved me a lot of money. It was a 2 min fix. Mine wasn't corroded one of the 3 wires pushed itself back and had a loose connection. I've noticed from time to time my dispenser would not allow water and ice to come out. Now it's just had the blinking zeros. Seems like the fix for both.

How do you get the part off to get to this plug?
It's my understanding it's the black grate that runs along the bottom of the fridge.

  • juxtapos99 Jul 21, 2017

It's just two regular philips screws that are holding the grill. You have to open the fridge and freeze doors to see them. Look on the far sides of the grill near the top edge.

phartm - thank you for saving the day! Your suggestion worked like a charm. Re-plugging that connector fixed the flashing zeros and the dispenser not working.

Yes that absolutely worked! Thanks! I previously tried unplugging the refrigerator for 30 seconds but that didn't work.

When I took off the bottom grill, I noticed my connector was wet so I untaped the electrical wire from the water supply hose (not a smart idea to tape those together GE). That wetness could have created an electrical problem... who knows. But the unplugging the connector and plugging it back made the water dispenser work even though it was still wet.

Afterward I dried off the connector as best I could. It had some brown rust/mold stains on the inside of the white plastic connector. I'm not sure if the hose is leaking slightly up top or if it's just condensation from where the hose enters the fridge.

I have a 4+ year old GE side by side, model #GSHS6PGYAESS, and the water/ice dispenser just started acting up. Whenever I would press the water/ice lever, the light would flash and the display would show the temperature settings for the freezer and refrigerator but nothing would come out of the dispenser. The solution here was exactly what was wrong with mine too. I checked the connector below the freezer door and found it was wet and had greenish lime scale/corrosion on it and inside the electrical tape. As I was cleaning the connector, the white wire just pulled out. Apparently it had corroded completely off. For a temporary fix, I cut the red wire going into the other end of the connector and spliced it together with the white wire. Later today, I will pick up a new Molex connector and pins and repair the connection correctly. Thanks for the help guys! The internet is AWESOME!

I had the same exact issue as Thomas. My ice/water panel alternated from blinking all zeros to 0 and 37 for a couple of days.

When I looked under the panel there was some green scale on the connectors and and the white wire was loose. It came right out of the Molex connector with a light tug. After the white wire was completely out of the molex socket there was no power to the panel. I then snipped the red wire and spliced it to the white wire. Everything now works.

My question: Do I really need to replace the molex connectors or just leave the spliced wire as is. I dont think the Molex connector adds anything other than convenience to plug & unplug.

FYI: My fridge is a GE side by side model GSHL5KGXGCLS

The connector truly is there for convenience. After cleaning the connector, some months later it failed again. This time I just cut the the connector out altogether and soldered and taped the wires. All is good now for the rest of the life of the fridge.

I just completed servicing the ice dispenser motor that was frozen up. Put it all back together and flashing zeros! Could not for the life of me figure out how this repair caused the whole fridge to not startup again. Red MANY posts all pointing to replacing the main board. Came across this one, and it was exactly my problem too! I must have bumped the plastic cover in front of the wire under the freezer door. It too was corroded. Cleaned it, plugged it in, and all is well in my kitchen! This post was a lifesaver!

The misbehaving electrical connector (Kurt C's Sep 22, 2018 picture) causing flashing zeros is directly below the freezer door. Your picture appears to be a different model refrigerator.

Thanks, everyone, for the info. Same problem with zeros flashing resolved by drying electrical connector behind plastic grill. Probably because of co sensation from freezer door, water dripped through plastic sheathing into connector. So I carefully remove about two inches of the sheathing, dried the connectors, then elevated the connector above the sheathing when reinstalling the wires. So far, so good.

Same issue and fix here on a 2 year old GE gss25gmhbces. Water drips down the inside of the wire cover and corroded the connection. Ice dispenser stopped working and display would flash 0/zeros. I just wired them together directly and everything works fine. I moved the black wire sleeve up so the water can drip out before the connections.

This was a lifesaver. I had replaced the control board and everything was working great in my garage. Then when I went to move it into the house I had to take the freezer door off. When I put it back together in the house it started doing the flashing zero and the ice/water dispenser wouldn't work. I was so bummed and thankfully started searching online and this came up. Started messing with the connector at the bottom of the door and bam back in action. Now how do I stop the loud rattle when it shuts off? Ha

Man did I get lucky catching this site when I searched for "000 display". The day before no power to ice/ water dispenser. Then tonight 1030pm. Fridge stopped cooling. I was ready to cal the repair guy and take a day from work. Followed the instructions on the previous posts, located the 3 wires, cleaned them of oxidation etc, retapped with electric tape and 30 min. Later... had a drink with the wife to celebrate my alpha-ness.

How do I get it to produce ice?

Without a model# it is impossible to help you.. Sometimes it is simple and other times it is not. Samsung has a ton of issues related to icemakers and could be as simple as turning it on "usually done through the front controls on samsungs" or you could have one or more bad water valves in it. (just because the water works doesn't mean the ice will.. It is two different valves,or sides of the valve).

A way to check for a bad valve is to defrost the fridge. 24 hours, unplugged, doors open. This will clear any ice build up within a line. Plug back in and see if it starts making ice. If the problem comes back then the valve is usually seeping and will stop making ice again. This method is free and completely tool-less but takes time and you have to move your food.

Hi, it sounds like your having problems with the thermostat ,they don't last for ever. I had the same problem with a fridge freezer and i got the temp thermostat replaced. You have a modern unit and you may have two but i think you have to look at the ice cube maker side first. Check that the water supply is getting to it.Have a look at your manual or you can type in the make and model and look up online .

Ice cubes stuck half way up and will not dispense. Frozen in place. Water from chute is misaligned and partially goes into bin.

I have had this happen numerous times. I would unplug your fridge and get a hairdryer. This will melt the ice in a few minutes. Sounds craz but works and again UNPLUG the fridge

My LG refrigerator is not dispensing Ice or Water. when the button is pushed it makes the clicking sound but the light does not come on and nothing happens

There are a few reasons why your water may not be working. The first is that the fresh food side of your fridge is too cold and it has frozen. You can check that by removing the crisper drawer and checking the reservoir behind it. You can thaw the water with a hair dryer on low setting.

The next possibility is that it is your filter. If you have not replaced it in the last year, now would be a good time to consider doing so.

The last and most probable is that the water valve on the back of your fridge has failed, and not letting the water in for the ice maker and water dispenser.

This can be replaced by unplugging the fridge and removing the rear cover. You will see the valve where the water line is connected. There are several variations of this valve and you can click the link below to match up what you have.

Once you have matched the valve up, you can replace the cover and plug the fridge in. One of the biggest reasons that I use the site below is that they have excellent service after the sale including support for installing your part; according woth the right model, CHECK REPLACEMENT HERE.

My fridge keeps freezing my food

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

Water dispenser not working

I am currently experiencing the same problem. It happen when I pressed the rapid cool button on the inside of the fridge and the temperature went down to 36 degree F. I assume that my water line is frozen. As soon as we use up some of the food in the fridge, I'm going to clean out the fridge and let the temperature rise, hopefully thawing the blockage. This is the only thing that I can think of.
