HP Compaq Presario CQ50-110US Laptop Logo
Anonymous Posted on Mar 19, 2010

Can anyone tell me why a keyboard on the CQ50 would stop working after opening the case? I replaced the display in my CQ50, something I have done several times before with other laptops. When i reassembled, the keyboard no longer functioned. The touch pad is fine and I can use an external USB keyboard. I bought a brand new replacement keyboard and that doesn't work either. Could something have happened to the system board to make the keyboard stop working?

Yeah, I did. I must have disconnected and reconnected that thing 25 times.

Are you sure that you have inserted the strip connector correctly into the motherboard connector? If not fully inserted before closing the pressure clips it may not connect properly.

Vgn-nw150j keyboard Sony Vaio many keys stopped working all of a sudden need help?

Laptop keyboards do deteriorate from time to time. Once any key stops working, it is time for a replacement. Doing so is not difficult. Simply undo the case screws and gently separate the case to expose the keyboard. The keyboard floats inside and lays in the main board. Lift gently and pull out the small flat wire connection. The keyboard slides out and replace with a new board. Place flat cable in port on the main board, lay keyboard on top of chassis, close the top/bottom of case, tighten screws and all done. Go on line for Keyboards.

Black band down centre of screen

Try to see if it is not a issue caused by using a wrong resolution ..In this case if you use one with a small size height ..may cause a black band on the bottom ...so ..open the display settings ...and under the resolution ...choose one by one ...untill you get to one which fits your screen and such ..If this seam not to work ... it may be a corrupted driver..In this case download and reinstall the driver for the video card ..This will fix it if there is something wrong with the driver..If after reinstalling the driver and choosing different resolutions will not make it right again ..you should consider the display being permanently damage d ..and look for a replacement for i t..
to check if it is a display damage ...try to hook up the external monitor ...(secondary monitor ..vga out ) ..Just plug another monitor you may have around in the vga port ..and enable it from the driver ..If that black band appears again ..it means there is nothing wrong with the display ..but it something from the video card ..or operation system ..First try to reinstall it ..and than look for video card replacement ..or in case it is a built in video card ..and can not be replaced..and also has no slot for other card to be installed...you may consider to get a external card on fire-wire or usb ..for to be able to use it proper ..(will be tricky to make the wiring for the monitor ..but will work with an external one .
lets hope it is nothing that serious and will work ..

The LCD doesn't on even if my laptop was turned on already..the screen is totally off.

If it shows something when you start it .. like the devices or if it let you goto BIOSA ..it means it is something wrong with the video card settings ..and in this case you will have to reinstall it ..or see if the display 1 is not disabled..By pressing Fn + f 4 or F5 or whatever key it has the monitor sign on it ..
If this do not work ..you will have to see if it is the display to blame or the inverter for it ..If it is the back light inverter ..it will show shadows in bright light .....but if is the display will be completely dead..In this case open it and see if it is the wire contact with the board to blame ...and if this is no case..you have to change the display ..
There can be a case of a dead video card ..to prove that ..use a external monitor and if the card is dead and the display has no blame ..will not work with the external monitor ..but if works ..than is the lcd display to blame ..and there is nothing to do but changing it ...This is a easy job to do if you have the spare p[art ...Just remove the hinges cover..and all the hidden screws on the edge of the display ..(hidden with round plastic pieces )

Zxcv keys not working

It is possible that something was spilled on the keyboard (like juice) and now they won't work anymore. In this case, if you have a normal keyboard you can open it up and clean it or take to a repair shop or just buy a new one. If you have a laptop it's a bit tricky because if you haven't done this before it's more difficult to open it and clean it. So if that's the case take it to a repair shop and they will clean it OR tell you what it's wrong with it.
I presumed there was something spilled on the keyboard. If that's 100% not the case you might want to provide more detail because I can't think of another reason for this to happen. Haven't found anything relevant on the internet either.

I cant open windows it stops at the microsoft bar

Ok, you should have a recovery program that will sort this out.

If you have a recovery CD, just insert it as soon as you turn it on, and it will then boot from the CD. Just follow the on screen instructions.

If you don't have a recovery CD, you may have a recovery partition on your hard drive. For this you need to enter your BIOS/settings screen. When you turn on the laptop, keep pressing F2. If this doesn't work, and Windows tries to load, switch it off, and try again by pressing Del.

When you are looking at the BIOS screen, you should have along the top, some page options (Something like, Information, Main, Security, Boot and Exit). Using the arrows on the keyboard, move over to Main. Now, somewhere on the screen should be something called D2D Recovery, or something similar. Highlight it and make sure it's Enabled. Also, when you highlight it, on the right habd side of the screen it will list Item Specific Help, and this will tell you what keys you need to press, this is normally Alt + F10. Now move over to exit and select Exit Saving Changes. This will then restart the laptop. As soon as it restarts, keep pressing the keys that it listed on the BIOS screen. Follow the on screen instructions.

Hope this helps.

Keyboard just stopped working!!

Have you replaced the keyboard batteries? The drivers will be in add/remove programmes with the name of your keyboard. Uninstall them and re install, but if the mouse is working the chances are the driver is ok.

Only the keyboard is working

Quite often this is due to a bad door switch. Opening the door while cooking (without first hitting the STOP pad) is the primary cause of door switch failure. I have a text file called "doorsw.txt" which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems. You can find the file via a Google search. In some cases, the problem is a bad connection or a bad relay on the control board. That's something we see from time to time, but it's usually a door switch.
