Playstation turns on but doesn't show anything on the screen. I was playing a game, when it froze and then the screen turned black and became unresponsive. I tried turning it off, but had to use the back switch. When I turned it back on, the machine ran and the lights were on, but the screen remained black. HELP!! thank you!!

You need to use a vacuum and suck the back out or blow it out with air . While power is off on PS3 turn power on holding down the eject button it will blow it self out .
It is because It is because fat partitions dont suupport manupulation of files bigger than 4 gb. Convert it to ntfs and it will work. And you might wonder that it worked for 15 min. ISo when you play a game lots of cache is generated and size of game is nearly doubled so this causes problem on a fat partition. And on
i will turn on my ps3 it goes to the main screen shows but the game cd doesn't show so i will have to eject an put it in and it would start playing but it will keep freezing then when i'm playing i will beat a level then freeze so it want save every time
It's possible that you have a faulty disc. Check the disc for scratches or scuffs and use a disc cleaner on it or take it to a GameStop and have them clean it. I have a copy of Devil Summoner 2 for my original PS2 and it works fine. If all your other games work fine, then 9 times out of 10 it's a problem with the game.
