You must buy the Special Traffic cord to receive the traffic.....it will have 2 lights to it to let you know that it is working..... just a regular cigarette lighter adapter plug will Not work, you need the Traffic Receiver cord.
You need to check the fuse for both the car's cigar lighter AND the one in the GPS power plug (that goes into the cigar lighter outlet). Both must be good for the GPS to charge and power up.
I don't know if your friends cord worked in you car - or hers - so you're going to have to find out if it is the cord fuse or the car fuse. Since her cord worked on your GPS, start by using HER CORD connected to YOUR GPS in both cars. If it works in her car, but not in yours, check & replace your car's cigar lighter fuse. If or when it works in both cars, disconnect her cable and connect your cable to your GPS again. Connect into your cigar lighter. If it works, you're done. If it doesn't work, disassemble the plug at the end of the GPS cord (cigar lighter end) and check and replace the fuse if blown. You should be good to go at this point.

You can use it on its internal battery but they only last an hour or two. If you can't fix the lighter socket you could add one fairly easily then the Nuvi will last for the whole trip running on car power
Look in the back. There is a small rubber cap on top of the external antenna hookup. Remove the rubber cap with a pin and hookup a long wire on the middle. That should amplify the signal.
How long have you had it for? The thing with batteries is that they are best charged fully and used till the battery is empty and then recharged which doesn't suit sat navs. Can you you get it to turn on at all as i doubt you could replce the battery
If the cigarrete lighter plug still has power then is more likely a defective lighter. I've just replaced the lighter on my Tercel so I would suggest to borrow one to try the plug before buying a new one.
Good Luck.
I recently ran into the same problem, my 205w would not power back on. I logged in Garmin website under repair solutions. Said hit reset button using pen or stylis. My 205w does not have a
reset button....further comments in the reset instructions said if your device does not a button,
slide on switch to the left and hold 10 to 15 seconds it should power on while your holding it.
it took 12 seconds for me... This was refered to as a soft reset
depends on what all options are you using are you transmitting to your stereo using the bluetooth options the battery life is not to long mabe 1-1.5 hours
Verify that the car cigarette lighter outlet is working. Do you have something that you could plug into the lighter like a light?
With the car running plug the Garmin into the cigarette lighter outlet. Does it come on without pushing the ON button? If the answer is no then there is either a problem with the cable or the cigarette lighter outlet. It should come on by itself if the lighter is working. Also are you using Garmin cables and DC adapter?
