When i put my mercury 150 hp outboard into gear it hits really hard. Why ? It happens in forward and reverse.
Tickover should be around 1000 rpm then when in gear about 700 to 800 rpm but try as little as possible so engine is happy not to stall when in lake ! depends what pitch prop used also , bigger the pitch more drag ! dont adjust the cable , adjust the throttle stop on the carbs !

See if you can turn down the base idle some. Then check your gear lube, sometimes you can get an airpocket and the top end is dry. Last, if still not fixed, see if you can adjust the cables so that the throttle RPM changes after the gears do.
You want a little lag in the throttle so you don't take out a dock when coming onshore.
