My Garmin Nuvi 200 (2 yrs old) will not charge and the USB port appears to be loose. If we can get the charger in "just right" it will show maps but does not charge so as soon as there is even a slight movement of the charger cord, all is lost. Mostly, it will simply not even turn on because the battery is dead.
My condolences. I would suggest you plug the unit in to your computer's USB port using an appropriate data cable (in case you no longer have the Garmin data cable, there are lots of devices, including cameras, that use such a cable with the large USB plug at one end and the mini-USB at the other). That would give you a handle on where the fault lies -- in the auto charger cable itself vs the nuvi's socket. If the nuvi charges from your computer, you're halfway home; if not, I suspect the cost of repairing the nuvi's USB jack could exceed the cost of a replacement unit.
Sounds like the charger port connections that are soldered to the board have either broken loose(hence why you can wiggle it right and get it to come on) or burnt away from the board(which it sounds like the actual charging prong(there are five prongs on the back of the port which connect to the board) has has burnt since it will come on but not charge). If your really want to keep this unit that badly, you could find your nearest cell phone repair shop and ask them if they will replace the charger port in your unit. I am a repair technician for a cell phone repair store in kansas city and we change charger ports in GPS Units a few times a month. but really it will probably be about the same cost for you to buy a new unit that is actually a newer model than your current one.
