Below are two of the most common problems encountered with projection TV sets.

Problem #1 - CONVERGENCE PROBLEM

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

COLOR IS OFF. REDS ARE WEIRD AND YELLOWS ARE TOO - 49abec3.jpg

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.

This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from TvRepairKits.com

Their kits include a step by step instruction gCOLOR IS OFF. REDS ARE WEIRD AND YELLOWS ARE TOO - 2_bing.gifinal OEM Sanyo2_bing.gif STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around video.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from TvRepairKits.com . It includes replacement coolant, step by step instructions, support, etc.

What is the purpose of an R2 filter?

Each filter intensifies its color and darkens others, especially the color opposite on the color wheel. They're not of much use in color photography, unless you want weird color casts, but they come into their own in black&white photography.
For example, a red filter intensifies red and darkens blue. It can make a sky look almost black, making clouds pop out. Similarly it can darken foliage. A green filter on the other hand will brighten foliage.
If your camera can take black&white photos, try taking pictures of a red rose with green leaves with and without the filters. With one combination the rose and the leaves will be the same shade. With a red filter the rose will be bright against the dark leaves. With a green filter you'll get a dark rose with bright leaves.
With digital photography you can achieve the same effect in postprocessing, but some times its easier to get the result in camera.

Contrast really dark but seems to improve after the tv has been on several hours

Hi:
You may have a problem with the inverters in the unit, they are responsible for lighting up the back panel. Check or have checked the power supply voltage to the inverters, should be around 18-24 volts DC. Also leaky capacitors on the power supply will cause this issue as well as leaky or puffy capacitors on the inverter.

My monitor is all weird colors

Generally, this is caused by the loss of one of the main color inputs (Red Green Blue). Do the Following:
  1. Check the cable connections at both the monitor and the computer. Look inside the connector for any bent bent pins (there may be some that appear to be missing, generally that is normal) then reset the connections firmly and tighten the retainer screw snug, but not extremely tight.
  2. If that doesn't resolve, try the monitor on a different system and see if the problem follows the monitor. If it does, try a different cable. If the problem doesn't occur on another system, then the video card of the effected system is suspect.
  3. If issue occurs on multiple systems with known good cables, then the monitor will need replacement.

The colors on my monitor are faded/bright always changing.

Right click on your desktop (not an icon but a blank space), click "personalize", click on the tab on the far right(settings), click the drop-down menu on the left side above the colored banner, make sure it is set to the most colors(usually 32). If you need a walkthrough for Vista I can provide that as well.

Hi..

Check the owners manual and see if there's a place that allows you to reset to factory defaults.
Sounds like your color settings Hue--Saturation ETC are way off the mark

Picture settings

Colorimetre HCFR software
AVC HD 709 calibration disk
Spyder2 colorimeter (I know most prefer the Eye-One meters, but the Spyder2 was available from my job at no cost)

Here are the settings:

PS3 Blu-Ray player

Output Format (HDMI): Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr (important!!! NOT RGB output)
BD 1080p 24hz Output (HDMI): On (this TV can reproduce video at 48hz for accurate 2:2 pulldown)
Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super White (HDMI): On (not sure if this matters)

Aspect Ratio: Set By Program (Personal Preference)

Take time to get used to the settings, you may think the screen looks dull at first. The truth is most people have way too much contrast on their TVs.
These settings will also work for Cable or Dish hookups, in which case you may change the Noise Reduction option to Medium to reduce signal noise.

How to reset to mfg settings or how to set red/blue color convergence?

You could try using the first time set-up option and see if that resets it. If you don't have the owners manual it can be found at the following link.
http://www.p4c.philips.com/na4/9/9p6034c/9p6034c_dfu_aen.pdf

There are detailed instructions on how to set the convergence in the manual on page 8.

Running out of Brightness

use the advanced options page and reset the factor blue and red convergence defaults then do re apply the auto color defaults color at first it seemed very red (which is good because red was the missing factor in the green picture) but after reseting all the color and tints to the normal ranges I then reset the color auto correct again and all seems fine.
