could be that your rack and pinion is going out try draining the power sterring fluid and make sure you know how much came out and then put in some fulid and to top it off put in some Seafoam trans tune and drive it around for about 30 to 50 minutes and that should fix the problem it beats buying a new rack and pinion their expensive
The whole rack & pinion does NOT move! Only the rod out of either end of it. If the main body, where the hoses connect, is moving the mounting bolts are missing, or broken.
Normally any vehicle with rack & pinion steering, that will not turn left equals a bad rack & pinion.
The "wont turn left" is the classic industry wide indicator that the rack & pinion is worn out.
Your rack n pinion needs flushed out,,go to youtube and type in search Charlie Kilmer or how to flush rack n pinion,,,Charlie Kilmer videos will come up and he can show you step by step instructions on how to do this, alot of folks buy a new one when you dont have to .
It sounds like you have a bad balljoint or rack and pinion. Another possibility is upper strut bearings.
What is happening is there is too much play in the ball socket. It rocks one way on a left turn and another on a right turn. You did not indicate a 2 wheel drive or 4x4. Some of the strut towers have bearings on top. You should also check for missing metal around the strut tower.
If you have rack and pinion, the hydraulic rods can be bent. But I would go more with the Balljoints because a bad rack and pinion would affect steering effort but not change the tire alignment in both directions.
when power steering is leaking. you need a new rack and pinion. you need to find out if you need it rough or smooth and prices vary pedending on make and model and the labor is extra. rack and pinions can run from $437 and up and that does not include labor. call a auto parts and ask them to look up a rack and pinion for the make and model of your car then you can call and see how much labor will cost but alot of places want you to buy the part from them which can be more expensive
check the power steering pump, if its good than it will be rack and pinion issue. the pump create a high pressure to help assist with steering, and the rack and pinion work like hydraulic cylinderwhichreceive the pressure from the pump and the steering work like control valves. by turn left or right you controling the pressure to make the wheels turn either right or left. check and see if you have any leaks.
If you can turn fine one direction and not the other then the pump most likley is not the problem. I would lean more towards the rack and pinion. The pump only supplys pressure, the rack has controls for direction.
sadly it sounds like the rack and pinion is going bad..rebuilt units are available ...you'll need a 4 wheel alignment after replacement. Get this fixed as it very dangerous and will only get worse
