If the problem is with its picture linearity [Vertical], you have to enter its service mode to correct it. It is best to replace all the electrolytic capacitors [5 or 6] of it, at the vertical scan output circuit, before doing any adjustments, because, if there is any of it is damaged, the fault to this kind can occur too. After replacing it, just switch ON the set, and check the picture linearity is correct. If not, enter its service mode, and adjust the vertical picture linearity. The horizontal line in the screen is the problem cause by vertical output driver. The vertical output is located at the verical section.Maybe theres a loose connection in vertical section or leaked capacitor. It also the cause of deffective vertical ic.So its better to repair and trouble shoot by the authorized technician. If you have knowledge in Tv.Try to replace the leaked capacitor.
That is your vertical linearity adjustment on the back of the TV, called Vert.Lin. knob, if you do not have one take it to a TV repair shop and they will fix it.
The Height adjustment is off... look in the back of the TV set, it has some knobs in the back, one should be vert.lin for Vertical Linearity adjustment, and there is another call Vert.Hgt. for Vertical Height adjustment. try adjusting the Vertical Height first with someone watching in the front of the big TV to see if the top comes back into view, you might have to adjust the knob very slowly one way then the other way, to make this adjustment. If it doesnot adjust take it to a TV shop to get it repaired.
Good Luck.
Almost always, your described fault of the TV is the pump capacitor in the vertical section. These capacitors tend to leak due to the heat build-up in that area. Other than that, no other component (to my knowledge) could exhibit the same symptoms. Price wise, component cost should just be a few dollars something making the repair if done by yourself (DIY) worth the effort. This is a relatively easy/quick repair, what would be more challenging is identifying which of the hundreds of capacitor is the one faulty and getting acces underneath the board to perform soldering.
To help you determine which, initially identify which is the vertical section. The vertical IC is often a single in line package with 7 or more pins. This IC would be attached to an aluminum heatsink. It would be very close to a 4 big wires terminal/connector that goes to the yoke. Very very close to the vertical IC would be several capacitors, about 5, certainly not more than 10. Among these capacitors, 1 would be relatively bigger with a value in the neighborhood of 100uF/50V. This is the pump capacitor. Replace it with a similar value readily available from most electronics supply store including Radio Shack. You would need a soldering iron to effect the repairs.
sounds like the vertical output is causing the CRTs to shutdown for protection. Try resoldering the vertical output IC that will often correct the problem. If not the vertical output IC may be defective.
