Is it normal to have to take the filter out to vacuum up water?
Your wet/dry vac came with 2 filters.
Paper for dust and dirt and Foam for wet/dry use.
If you left the paper filter on and tried to vacuum a wet surface, you most likely shredded your paper filter and clogged the outlet vent above your water shut-off float.
You should always use a filter to prevent clogging of the cyclonic impeller blades next to the motor. When extracting water or moisture you will need to use the Foam filter to prevent water from collecting in your fan blade area which then creeps to the motor eventually causing it to seize up.

Definitely not. Do not use water or any liquids to clean it. Te normal use life is 2-3 years keeping it maintained. You can clean it dry with the dust brush from your vac attachments. place in a plastic bag and tap it some folks even us an air compressor to blow out the impacted dirt. you will only want to use the Hoover brand, other generic brands dont fit as well.

SOURCE: water leaking from out of the heppa filter
Reasons for that to happen:
a) You have tilted the vac while vacuuming
b) Used the Rainbow without separator (basket like thing on the bottom of the motor)
c) Overfilled the rainbow tank with water (may have happened when shampooing with AquaMate)
Clean and install back the separator, remove HEPA, Set the Rainbow on empty water pan (with HEPA removed) turn it on for a while so everything will dry. Install new HEPA.
You will have to get a new HEPA filter (you can find them HERE)
Good Luck,
Rocky

check the intake hose at the bottom it may be clogged.try blowing into the long hose if you can't blow through it then you have a clog somewhere between the long hose and your intake hose at the bottom.the intake hose is the somewhat clear hose that comes up from behind the base at the bottom.you will see it on the backside

The motor overheats from the filter being clogged underneath the canister or the canister or both are clogged-without the air flow the motor overheats and shuts off as a precautionary measure.By letting the motor cool off it will start again but will turn off shortly if the filters are not properly cleaned.Hope this helps everyone.
