I JUST BOUGHT THIS COMPAQ NX9010 & WAS TOLD IT HAS WIRELESS BUT IT DONT CONNECT. I GUESS THE 1394 IS IT BUT IT DONT WORK. MY E-MAIL IS [email protected]
1394 is not wireless, that is what the computer calls it's firewire port. Maybe your wireless card is off, most laptops have a tiny on/off switch for the wireless card somewhere around its front edge.
From what I've found out on the internet I don't think all NX9010s have built in wireless, you may have to buy a wireless card thatyou can put in the card slot or a usb wireless card.

That link is to a PDF of the product manual for that laptop (look at p12 (9) to show where wireless card switch shoud be)
From what you have said it looks like that other light is an infra-red port and I'm sorry to say it looks like your laptop may not come with a built in wireless card as the manual says it is in selected models only.
You can however get some very cheap cardbus wireless cards (go in the smaller slot next to the floppy drive p14 (10)) which you can use to get wifi, like this belikin 54g card:

which only costs £12.99
Hope this helps.

no switch found, i do see 2different size slots on top each other, if these are my card slots should there be a card in one of them
before it can work. they are on the left front side of my laptop
p.s. i checked the top one it 3.5 floppy, the bottom one is maybe
2.5 inches it has a flip out push in eject i guess.
buy the way i have what looks like a small light that has never lit up yet an under it looks like a infrared type lite or censor glass
for something. i do need a book to describe all my functions
& lights, & buttons what they r an what they do
