This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.22912101&pathTaken=partSearch

look at the diagrams for the agitator, basket and tub and you should see how the top components of the agitator fit.

See the part "Dog, agitator "

Remove the fabric softener unit, lift the top agitator cap (use a screwdriver) and you should see a plastic part in the center of the top agitator with a 1/2" square drive.

Remove the drive and lift off the top agitator. Turning it over you should see the 4 "dogs", replace these and the top agitator should turn in one direction only.

Replace the 1/2" drive, the cap and fabric softener unit and the top agitator should work.

Also see the following illustrated description of the above.

Agitator for whirlpool washing machine

The plastic dogs are stripped inside the center of the agitator. To remove agitator pop off the top center cover(slot for screwdriver) There is a 7/16 inch bolt with standard thread, remove it and pull out agitator. Pull the agitator apart, you can stand on the bottom half and pull on the top, you have to reassemble it with the new dogs replaced(there are four in a package) Fairly simple, no special tools needed,
good luck.

Get agitator out without breaking it

Take the head of the agitator off, It unscrews. Once it;s off look down inside there at the very bottom. You will see a bolt, this bolt comes out which hold your agitator in. Once this is removed, the agitator is easy to get out. This will be where the agitator dogs are. Mostly worn.

The bottom part of the agitator will turn, but not the top part

The agitator has two parts. One is the bottom agitator and then you have the top agitator that moves the clothes around. If the top part of the agitator is not moving. You probably need to replace the dog ears. Check the agitator dogs inside the top of the agitator, they are bad for wearing out, sometimes the agitator may only agitate one way when the dogs are worn out. This is an instruction sheet that came with the last parts I ordered for a Whirlpool/Inglis style direct drive washer agitator. If you need to replace your agitator dogs, please see this link for some repair aid. -- click on this link directly to get the detailed instruction for replacing dog ear
http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsdesk_id=136
to remove the whole agitator check out the instructions as follows:
(1) Kenmore washer..... Remove the agitator cap, some caps unscrew and some will just pull off. Look for a bolt and remove the bolt, lift up on the agitator...picture1, picture2.
(2) Kenmore washer.....Remove the agitator cap, some caps unscrew and some will just pull off. Look for a plastic bolt and remove the bolt, the plastic bold will have a square in the middle that the square end of the shaft of an socket extension ( or a very large flat screw driver ) will fit into the square hole to unscrew the plastic nut off...remove the upper 1/2 of the agitator....remove thebolt holding down the bottom 1/2 of the agitator, lift up on the agitator. also you can get the exact required parts from www.repairclinic.com
This will help. Thanks please keep updated. please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya.

Agitator dogs worn

Ok, here is how ya do it. Remove the protective cap on top of the agitator (remove softener dispensor if optioned). Down in the hole you will see a plastic cap with a square fitting built in to it. Take a 1/2 extension and stick it in the hole. Unscrew the entire plastic button, then the spring. You can now remove the top and replace the dogs. A long pair of needle nose pliers can also unscrew that cap if its not to tight.

Removing Agitator from Kenmore Model 110 Top Loader

How to replace Whirlpool/Kenmore washer
dual action agitator ratchet ‘dogs’, kit # 285770
Tools needed: Screwdriver, 3/8" drive ratchet wrench, 7/16" socket (older models), 3/8" drive to 1/2" adapter (newer models), long 3/8" drive extension, small amt liquid detergent
1) Pry the agitator cap off by inserting a screwdriver into the cap’s notch
2) Pull the inner cap (if present) off – most Whirlpool machines use this inner cap, with a handle, to gain access to the center bolt
3) Remove the bolt in the center of the agitator
(Earlier models used a 7/16" hex-head steel bolt)
(Recent models use a 1/2" square drive plastic nut – use a 3/8" X 1/2" ratchet adapter)

4) On older models, grasp the bottom portion of the agitator and pull the entire ***’y off.
(Recent models allow just the top portion’s removal to access these ‘dogs’)
5) Older models – place the agitator on the floor, and, standing carefully on the bottom portion, pull the top half off. Turn it over, and the dogs will be accessible for replacement.
6) Newer model dogs can be replaced once the ratchet ***’y is removed. There are several versions currently in use, but most can be replaced without removing the bottom agitator half. All‘4-dog’versions use the 285770 kit, regardless of the cam ***’y style. (Older agitators, rarely seen now, used a pair of 2 larger dogs, which are a different part number)
7) On older versions, be careful to align the two tabs when inserting the upper ***’y back onto the agitator bottom half. When these are aligned, they will friction-fit the two halves together, making it easier to reinstall the ***’y. Handle it only by the bottom half to prevent pulling the top half off when reinstalling.
8) Lightly lubricate the agitator cap’s rubber gasket using a bit of dishwasher detergent, and push it back into place. (On the Whirlpools with an inner cap, lube that cap’s o-ring too – makes it easier to snap into place)
9) Reach around and pat yourself on the back! You just saved at least $75.00!
