TV Sound Our tv's sound is distorted. When I turn it up a little the sound is garbled. It just does not have a clear sound. When I lower the volume to the lowest setting without turning the volume off, then it sounds ok but we just can't hear it well. Please help.

Replace the main board

If this is a "new to you" TV, keep reading. If it is a brand new TV, I'd be on the phone to the store to have a replacement ready for delivery / pick up. You do not want to be repairing a TV that is 2 days old.

The first thing to do is determine if the distortion is coming from the speaker or if it is on the signal going into the speaker. Do both speakers sound distorted or only one?

You didn't include the model number of your TV, so I can't speak to specifics. Look for a terminal on the rear of the set identified as "speaker" or "external speaker". If provided, there will be one set of terminals marked for the left and one for the right external speaker.

Connect a speaker directly to the terminals marked for either the left or right speaker (connect to the one that sounds distorted if only one of the built in speakers works correctly - other wise pick either speaker terminal pair.). Speakers that have RCA plugs on them, have built in amplifiers, require batteries or or to be plugged in to an outlet should not be connected here.

Alternatively, you could connect a pair of stereo headphones or earplugs if your TV offers a jack for them. It would have a headphone icon or say "phones" above the jack if one is provided.

Once connected, turn the TV on, lower the volume and set the TV to enable the external speakers / disable the internal speakers. This may be done via menu item selection or a small switch near the speaker terminals. Slowly increase the volume to listen to the quality or clarity of the sound coming from the speakers you connected. If they sound distorted, the problem lies with the audio amplifier in the TV. If they sound OK, then there is a problem with the speakers in the TV.

If you can't return the TV, you may have to see about using the left and right audio line out or HDMI jacks to send the audio to an external amplifier and speakers to hear the program.

distorted sound sometimes accompanied by buzzing is caused by detuned circuit in the SIF amplifier and sound detector circuit. a distorted sound alone is caused by a breakdown in AF amplifier circuit so try to change the sound ic since its the only options left. good luck!

Hello sir, Hi!, the garble is caused by two things, 1. a bad speaker, 2. a bad power amplifier IC.

To test the Speaker,
Remove the speaker out from the TV, (this needs disassembly stuff) test it using any available portable amplifier. or radio, OR replace the speaker with the same size.

If this does not solve the garble sound, replace the power amp IC. (this really needs skills in electronics.) thats it.

Use a audio signal tracer to pinpoint the distorted sound location,you can use an amplified pair of computer speakers.Or request the complete 9mb 126pages schematic diagram from my personal server at [email protected]

Try going into the menu and selecting the sound menu and resetting the sound to factory default..If this doesnt help matters you can change the sound preferences to custom settings..As long as the sound isnt distorted at low volume then this solution will apply..If the sound is distorted at low volume then your speakers may be faulty..sometimes caused by listening to the tv at full volume over long term which strains the speakers and prematurely ages them

I wish I had a solution--My DVD picture and sound is fine, but it takes about 30-40 minutes to get any kind of picture but it is broken--not clear at all - and the sound is all garbled, totally stops for seconds to minutes a a time. It is only a little over a yr old. I finally isconnectexd today and am going back to my cheap-o but dependable tv.

There's a possibility that you may be experiencing problems with the audio output IC -IC404 - All serial numbers produced until July 2003 might use one of these defective IC's. So if your set was manufactured before this date, that is probably the culprit. If not, and you have it connected to a cable box that has its own volume control, it could be that its volume is turned down and by turning up the TV's volume too high that you are getting this distortion.
