If it smells electrical, than you may need a new motor. If it smells more like burnt rubber, than you may have a brush or motor problem. To check you brush, take out the 5 screws that hold your bottom plate on the vacuum and remove the plate. Disengage the belt and see if the bearings at each end of the brush turn freely. If they do not, replace your brush. Also spin the motor shaft by hand and see if it turns freely. Hope this helps!
First, check to see if the drive belt for the brush is broken. If it is you need to get it replaced.
Also, remove the brush from the cleaner and clean if of all debris then check the small caps at both ends of the brush. If they do not move freely, add a little WD40 and rotate by hand until they move freely.
When putting the new belt on or replace the old one, be sure it is put on properly so the brush rotates in the right direction.
sounds like a bad motor. if the light is on at the switch and the motor doesn't run, then it could definitely a motor problem, worn down or dirty carbon brushes. the motor on these machines are not the best built, they require cleaning of the commutator yearly.
