Hi, i did the same thing with my tom tom 300 go, i fixed it by borrowing my mothers sd card from her tom tom 710, i put the card into a card reader and copied the hole card to my computer then copied it back onto my sd card out of my tomtom then put in mine and bingo it worked with all the fetchers that her tom tom had and the updated maps it still said it was a 300 but had the 710 stuff try this it worked for me it should work for you.

Red cross on sd card on startup

You can not use a sd card from one TomTom and put it into another TomTom. The operating system on the card is coded for each individual TomTom device. First try doing a reset with the card installed on your dads TomTom. The reset hole is on the bottom of the TomTom marked reset Use a streightened paper clip, insert the paper clip into the hole until you feel a click then hold it in for 20 seconds. If that didn't work and you have a card reader insert your dads sd card into the reader and make a backup of the everything on the sd card. Just copy and paste everything on the card to a folder on the desktop you have created on your desktop. Next delete everything on the sd card EXCEPT the maps and ttgo.bif or ttgo.bak file. Now that you have made a backup and deleted everything on the sd card except for the maps and ttgo.bif or ttgo.bak open TomTom Home. TomTom Home should see your card and install the operating system back onto the sd card. If it doesn't you may have to insert the sd card back into your dads TomTom and connect it to the pc. It may take a few times of doing this to get the latest operating system back onto your dads TomTom. You can do the same for your TomTom, but you cannot use any thing bigger than a 2 gb sd card. Do not get sdhc cards they won't work. This will only put the operating system for your TomTom onto the sd card. When you have installed the operating system onto your device it will say "no maps found", you will have to buy the map from TomTom..
tip

Save your TOMTOM

I can help some people who have problems with their TomTom but here is a tip for you to help yourself against future problems.

  • Backup your SD card to your PC.
  • Do this by removing the SD card from your TomTom. Insert it into an SD card reader conencted to your PC. Make a new folder on your PC called TomTom Backup. Then open that folder and copy all the files from your TomTom SD card into the TomTom Backup folder. Job done.
Data can be corrupted on SD cards and SD cards can easily be damaged. I you end up with a damaged card then at least you will have a backup of it on your PC. This can save you a lot of money as trying to get a TomTom going again without the software is very expensive.

good luck. homemender

Tom tom go 300 ''unable to store settings'' ''file access error'

Hi,
You might have the switch on SD card set to "read only" , This would stop your tomtom being able to write to the SD card ... hence , " unable to store settings " message . .... OR ... the folder where your tomtom wants to store the settings is corrupted ( on your SD card ) so it can't store them.... or similarly , the file is corrupted on the SD card ( maybe the card is damaged ) so the existing file cannot be overwritten . Check out all these possibilities before suspecting any hardware fault on your tomtom ..... GOOD LUCK

Please help

Hi,

Unfortunatly if you have deleted everything and do not have any backup then you will not be able to restore your TomTom to working condition.

If you do manage to copy or obtain SD card with files / maps then you will need the origonal product code and activation numbers in order to activate the maps. TomTom home software might restore some of the files needed but you will still need Maps and activation for the TomTom to work.

best regards and Good Luck

Map on tomtom go 300

The downloaded maps can be copied direct to the SD card or copied to the SD card via USB lead and PC connected through TomTom Home. Once you have the map on your SD card you will need to activate it with your product code number that you obtained when you purchased the map.

Good luck

Tomtom 300 software update deleted my maps

Hi Albert. Theres lots of data on the card besides the map that your tomtom needs in order for it to work. Theres really no solution can be offered as unfortunatly something has happened to the data on your card and something is either missing or corrupted. Exactly what would need to be investigated and its not really within the scope of doing so on this forum. Without any judgement to you or anyone else can I warn all other tomtom users ..... BACK UP YOUR SD CARD TO YOUR COMPUTER before you attempt any "update" to your tomtom. If you have made a backup Albert then I suggest you reload the backup onto your card and everything should work again. Fingers crossed. You might need to do a hard reset by pressing the reset button underneath your tomtom with a paper clip through the reset hole. Good luck.
