Usually a storm will not harm the mother board. I would try to replace the power supply. That should take care of your problem.

Why does my tv turn on then off , on, off continuosly by its self an wont stop

Electrical storms can damage components. Are you insured?

When you get the TV fixed/replaced, buy some surge protectors or a UPS (uninteruptable power supply) to protect the rest of your gear.

No power after storm

You will need to replace it. The storm fried your board for sure, there is no fix for that, and a broken board is useless. you can't really put it back together because the entire surface of an electornics board is conducting electricity through it from component to component. If it could be fixed, it will surely cost you more to fix than buy a new one. Sorry to be the bad news bearer but it is shot, you are left with a giant paperweight.

Bad power supply?

First of all, please ensure that the power outlet is ok. During such power surges, normally the power outlet gets affected. Try the TV on a different power outlet. The relay clicking on/off could be due to some components short in the primary supply.

Vizio plasma tv will not turn on by button or remote, cable box is lit. We had a loss of power last night due to a storm. What do we do to check it.

hi usually the cause of won't power on problem due to the storm is the current fluctuation which the tendency is power supply failure. now since totally dead set what you need is to open the tv unit then look for the power supply where the power cord is connected. check obvious defective component part like blown fuse and burnt part like resistor and capacitor. just replaced with the same value and ratings to avoid damage from others component.if their is no problem with the power supply the output voltages are good the main board get damaged. good luck thanks for consulting the fixya.

I have an Hitachi 32 in Plasma tv 32PD5200E which suffered a power surge from a storm sunday night , everything else in house ok replaced fuse but new one blew imediately . Is this set worth repairing as...

The tv have fries alot more components on the tv power supply board, than just the fuse.U have to have alots more equipments and very good eclectronic testing and troubleshooting skills to find out what exact components parts are burn and to replaced it on the tv power supply board.U could take a gamble chance and try website like Ebay.com to buy a whole new refurbish power supply board for the replacement.Might get the tv to be working again might not because power surges,if it have a big enough electrical static charges it will fries alots more boards and it components some where else too.Tv worth repairing or not it is up to u for to do the researching for the new tv prices and the prices charges by tv repair shops by those tv Techs. for repairing the tv..

Had a low voltage problem in the home. Main powerline at pole had one line broken almost all the way through, lights were dim, clothes dryer would not start, micro wouldn't heat, other stuff. After we got...

I would recommend checking the power supply first but it is possible the board may have gone as well.

Usually random shut offs or restarts are power related

HP Pavilion will not power up

Yes pwer in entering since the LED lights up but most probably your SMPS orpower supply has fried due to a voltage surge. Try replacing the Power supply unit and see if there is any difference(use a working SMPS for trial and if this works, you have the solution...........sodeep

Dell xps 420 desktop want go into windows mode or reboot

Hi,
When it comes to power surges it's hard to say how much of the system was fried. frown.gif It could stop at the power supply, it could stop at the motherboard, or it could go on to other components and fry everything.

The only way to tell what's good is to start testing individual parts in another machine. I don't recommend testing new parts in the damaged system as the new parts could be damaged by parts that are not working correctly in the old system. Also until you isolate the good parts you have no way of knowing if the part is not working because the motherboard is fried, or if it is because of another part that needs to work, for it all to work.

Although there is less of a chance, it is possible that testing damaged parts in another system can screw up that system as well.

If you don't have another computer to test on, you will need to take the system in to a repair shop and have them test the components.

Sorry for the bad news, but if it got past the power supply, chances are at the minimum, the motherboard is fried. frown.gif There is also a good chance you will need a complete new system.

PS Always disconnect all electrical components when the power is being worked on. You should test all the TV's and stereos that came off that switch too..

Monitor problem

Dear Booker3772,

From what you have written I assume you do not have a UPS system protecting the PC.

Unfortunately this mean that hardware has been damaged as electricity spikes have caused electrical stress to the components.

It would be helpfull to me if you where giving me a little bit more information but I will try to help. There are a few possibilities though that can narrow down the problem.

1. When you power up the system nothing happens - No noise no fans nothing. - Solution: The complete PSU or the fuse within is fried. (Change PSU and fire up again)

This is the most likely cause but these are also very possible.

2. When you power up the system the system fans, lights, hard disks make noise but you see nothing in the monitor except the sign. (The monitor's voltage regulation pcb is fried due to the storm) Try with a spare monitor if possible and if possible try the monitor to another PC

3. When you power up the system the system fans, lights, hard disks make noise but you see nothing in the monitor except the sign. If the monitor works fine, the PSU and the components seem to run fine most likely the components within the PC have been damaged. Not to the extend that a total failure is present but enough to create a mess. Some of the components will still probably be in good condition though. The only way to test them is by interchange one component with another.

In any case if the PC is still under warranty please go to a repair service centre and simply say that it stopped working. Do not mention storms, its your liability normally to protect the PC.
