1997 Cadillac Seville V8 Front Wheel Drive Automatic
This is my uncles car he was having trouble getting the gear selector out of park position recently so he forced it out. Since that time the car will not engage any gears forward or reverse. The scrolling message on the dash reads, "Theft System Problem" followed by "Car May Not Restart" The car does start however when the gear shift is moved from park down through nuetral and into drive positions the transmission does not engage. The trans does not engage in any of the positions -the engine idle fluctuates as you go from one position to the next. The trans will go into nuetral and was opperating normally prior to this -with no grinding, clunking or whirling sounds. Nor is it leaking or requiring added fluids frequently. What is wrong and how can I repair the problem.

Hi you answered a problem I recently posted regarding my uncles 1997 Seville transmission not engaging when put into gear. I thought the same as you something must have broken between the shifter and transmission. No the gear shift cable still operates the gear selector at the transmission through all the positions. When in park position the car does not move and when put into neutral you can easily push the car forward or backward. The park neutral position switch works as it should -the car only starts in park and neutral. The trans position indicators on the dash correspond with the position of the shifter. I know very little about the electronic controls for these cars but can not help thinking that some how the on board computer must be preventing the trans from engaging. Could the anti theft system have anything to do with this problem?
