Electric grill most often uses heater element to heat up.Maybe your heater elemen is shorted to oven body thus tripping the safety device. Check your grill system using insulation tester. If the insulation is low check the heater elemen insulation and if defective replace them.
no you dont need a new grill its just collecting fats from when you roasting and burning off when you initially heat the grill. if you use the grill more often it wont build up as much. covering the roast can reduce the saturation and perhaps a slightly lower temp will help reduce splattering.
If it is a fan assisted oven, then it is probably the oven element that has failed.
This is usually located at the rear of the inner oven compartment behind a removeable panel
If the fan is working o/k then the oven element is probably faulty, this should be at the rear of the oven behind a removeabkle cover.
Make sure you have the control set to grill , for grilling
If fan is workintg, but no heat, then replace oven element.
If no heat or fan, then make sure timer is set on manual and not on auto

You need to replace the fan oven element.
access to it is by removing the rear panel in the oven, there you will see the element.
