Try unplugging your usb cable to the printer, uninstalling the printer software, reinstalling the printer software, and plugging the usb cable back in when instructed during the installation.
You need to install the software and the drivers to make this printer working. Normally it comes with the set up disc. IF you did now recieve one, you can check the printers manual and support site HERE
I suggest not to plug the printer to your computer yet. Here's the link to the Lexmark website for the available Lexmark X6170 drivers http://bit.ly/b0XDka. Just choose the right driver compatible with your computer's operating system. Then download and install the software. Follow the instructions on the software. Hope this helps.
