If your Sony DSC HX1 camera appears to be working, but you can't see anything through the viewfinder or LCD screen, there are a few possible causes for this issue:
1. Display Settings: Check the display settings on your camera. There may be an option to switch between the viewfinder and the LCD screen. Make sure the correct display mode is selected.
2. Viewfinder/LCD Switch: Some cameras have a switch or button that allows you to toggle between the viewfinder and the LCD screen. Ensure that this switch is in the correct position for the display you want to use.
3. Display Brightness: It's possible that the brightness of the viewfinder or LCD screen is set too low, making it difficult to see the image. Check the camera's settings menu for options to adjust the brightness or contrast of the display.
4. Faulty Display: If the above steps don't resolve the issue, it's possible that there is a problem with the camera's viewfinder or LCD screen. This could be due to a loose connection, a damaged cable, or a malfunctioning component. In such cases, it's recommended to have the camera inspected and repaired by a professional technician or the manufacturer's service center.
5. Power Saving Mode: Some cameras have a power-saving feature that turns off the display after a certain period of inactivity. Check the camera's power-saving settings and make sure the display timeout is set to a reasonable duration.
If none of these solutions work, it's best to consult the camera's user manual for specific troubleshooting steps or contact Sony customer support for further assistance. They will be able to provide you with more detailed guidance based on the specific model and issue you're facing.
The Display button toggles the information shown on the LCD (or turns it off entirely). Make sure you haven't inadvertently pressed it and turned off the display. It works as follows:
Press once for Normal view in LCD viewfinder
Press twice to turn on Rule of Thirds grid lines
Press three times to turn off LCD display
Press and hold 1 sec. to decrease/increase LCD brightness
Think that you might have accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

Double check if the viewfinder is operable (not the LDC but the little thing you look through with one eye above it). Try pressing the display button to flip through the different modes as you're looking through the viewfinder. If the viewfinder does work (and the LCD screen doesn't come on as you're scrolling through the modes) then it is most likely dead (broken). If the viewfinder works, you're can still use the camera otherwise it's probably time to get a new one.
I found this "solution" on another site and it actually worked! Turn the camera upside down. Now, with the device off, tap it a few times in your hand. Now, turn the device on in the viewfinder mode. Tap it again if the viewfinder isn't active.
If you turn on the back LCD, the electronic viewfinder will remain on while in a shooting mode. There is no setting on the camera to use only the back LCD monitor while shooting. If you playback images in the Play mode, only the LCD monitor will turn on. However, if you press the Monitor button while in the Play mode, than the back LCD monitor will turn off. The image will display only in the viewfinder LCD.
