Roadmate 2000 will not turn on. charger light is lit. No response from unit. I turned it off and stored it for a few days, but now it is dead.

if you have a magellan 2000 as listed in the title, the 2000 can not be charged using the USB port, you need to have a car charger or a home charger to charge that unit...only certain magellan can be charged with the usb cable, but the 2000 isnt one of them...


you can read your user manual for the 2000 HERE the link is actually for a crossover, but its the same as a 2000/crossover and the 2500...magellan has removed the 2000 from there web site for some reason, but if you read the manual in that link, all models similar to your use the USB to transfer data to your unit from the PC, the charging port is below the USB port....if you need help finding a charger, just post back and ill find you one...i get all mine off ebay for just a few dollars.

Here are a few tests you can do. Bear in mind if the unit has not been charged for some time and the internal battery is completely flat, you will need to leave the unit on charge for some time even to get a charge light from the LED. Leave it on charge for at least 2 hours. First, check the LED is lit when the cable is plugged in to the cigarette lighter socket and/or mains charger? If it is not, the fuse in the cigarette lighter adapter may be faulty or the charger may not be working. If the fthe LED is lit, then is power available at the end of the cable that connects to your unit? Use your DC voltmeter to check this. If no power is available here, then your cable/charger is faulty - obtain a new one. If there is power at the connector, then the unit may be faulty.

plug it in to a known good charger for a few hours, then press and hold the power button for up to ten seconds.

if you can verify that the car charger is ok, try plugging it in to your computer using the usb cable. the 1412 should charge with the usb cable. if it still doesnt turn on, try and reset the unit,little pin hole on the side.

I had same issue with another Magellan unit. Not good idea to buy from them

ok so what u basically do is just keep the charger in the usb port. then take the battery out then plug it back in. this totally works!

You have to reset the unit with the slid switch and reset button on the teft side under the rubber cover
see your manual.

I Reset the unit by switching reset switch on and off.
The switch is on left side of my gps.

Your best bet is to contact Magellan directly. Their website is not the easiest place I've ever navigated. I did not see a specific listing for the Roadmate 2000, but when I queried them about upgrades for your unit, the response was Roadmate 2000/2200T. Manuals are available, but again nothing was noted about supporting the 2000.

The roadmate operates on five volts dc. Look at the back of the unit and it says so there. Inside the cig lighter plug that comes with the roadmate 2000 is a transformer that converts 12 v dc to five v dc. You used the wrong charger and put twelve volts across a unit that only handles and requires five volts.
Check to be sure that you used the correct charger. it sounds like you did not. It may be possible that the charger was still wet or was damaged when wet and that it shorted out.
Radio shack sells a charger for the car that is made for magellin roadmate 2ooo. It includes several different tips including the one that fits this gps unit and the output is five v dc. It is possible that what you smelled was the charger cord and not the gps unit itself.
I used the wrong charger on mine and had a similar problem. I bought this charger and all is well. radio shack cat no is 20-151. Get it soon because it is on sale for about thirteen dollars and is discontinued. As of today, sat jan 12, 2008 they still have them in stock at most stores. You can call ahead or look online and it will even tell you which stores have them, or you can order online as well.
No, if it is the gps unit titself, do not try to mess w the circuit board. Its cheaper to buy a new one. good luck to all w similar problems and ALLWAYS check to see that voltage and ac or dc symbols, as well as polarity, match up. If not bring your electronics to radio shack Before powering up and they can check all of this ffor free if you are unsure.
