May be ur cooling fan is not working n its getting shutdown due to overheating. Try to get it cleaned or replaced at local pc mechanic. Won't cost much. Otherwise it may be ur motherboard is about to die. Get backup whenever it is up.
Take it as a loose connection, go through all the connections and ensure they are making good contact. The only other explanation for this problem is Electro Static Discharge, or ESD. In which case some component is fried.
However the loose connection theory sounds like a winner.
Check the RAM modules, Hard drive and CPU as well as the CPU Cooler fan is connected.
there are 2 possibilities
1. cpu fan ventilation got blocked, so use you old tooth brush to clean it

The only thing in can think of is the cooling fan in the notebook has died. there is a few things that can cause them to go out.
1. just the age of the fan
2. alot of dust gets into the fan
3. smoking alot around the computer can cause tar to build up on the fan also causing it to go out.
4. The vents on the fan are clogged by dust.
Those are a few things that can cause this.
hope that helps a little bit thanks
Steven.
there is so many resons of shutdown it may be your pc has so much dust on the possessor fan due to dust ur possessor produce heat and its will be shutdown automatically
get a new battery and try that but check your power supply before you plug it in. Most laptops will work directly off power supply even with no battery present. If these solutions don't work for you then you need professional technicians help or a decent bin.
Usually this happens when the vista boot loader fails. During boot up, keep tapping F8 and then select Disable Automatic Restart... and get the stop error code which usually starts with 0x
