There are 2 up stream sensors (before the cat)
and 1 or 2 down stream sensors (after the cat)
most can be done with the special scocket you can by from autozone for 10.00 dollars

SOURCE: O2 sensor

There should be two O2 sensors. If you look inbetween the engine and radiator following the exhaust manifold down to the exhaust pipe you should run into the 1st O2 sensor, following the pipe down stream under the vehical towards the catalytic converter you should find the second O2 sensor. The 1st O2 should be easy but the 2nd might be difficult depending on your abilities. Coils will depend on 4 or 6 cyls, 1 for each cyl. Repair man, go to, pep boys, napa, auto zone, advanced auto parts to name a few.

Symptons o2 sensors

If your O2 sensors are malfunctioning, the main symptom would be that the Check Engine light will come on. On some vehicles, an O2 sensor circuit shorted to ground can cause a no-start problem.
If the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light is on and there is a code for the O2 sensors, I would like to also advise you that many O2 sensor codes are not caused by the O2 sensors themselves. In many cases, the O2 sensors are only REPORTING the problem. for example, a code P0171 "Oxygen Sensor Lean" code is rarely ever caused by the O2 sensor. It is usually caused by a vacuum leak or a failed Mass Airflow sensor (MAF) or Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor (MAP) or a bad fuel injector. In these cases, repairing the real reason that the engine is running lean will fix the O2 Sensor code without replacing the O2 sensor.

My Service Engine Soon light came on about a year ago. I took it into the shop and got that problem fixed but the light stayed on, so I took it to advance auto parts and code tested it and it said that...

There are several types of O2 Sensor codes. There can be "Lean O2 Sensor" codes, "Rich O2 Sensor" codes, "O2 Sensor Slow Response" codes, or "O2sensor Heater Circuit" codes. The specific code that is being set changes the way you must go about diagnosing and repairing the problem. I will say however, that in about 80% of all the O2 Sensor code problems that I have had to diagnose, the O2 Sensor itself was NOT the problem. The O2 Sensor was only reporting a problem that was actually caused elsewhere. O2 Sensors are the final checkpoint in the engine management system. I think of them like a report card. If the O2 Sensors are right, the rest of the engine management system is right. If the O2 Sensors are not right, the rest of the engine management system is probably not right. (Except in the 20% of the cases where the problem is actually being caused by a failed O2 Sensor)

Engine light is on. Apparently the problem relates to a sensor on the muffler. I am told there are three sensors on and the one that is causing the problem is the rear sensor or the one furthers away from...

The oxygen sensor can prove to difficult. Your third sensor should be after the catalytic converter depending on make, model and year. You'd need a O2 sensor socket and remove it when the engine is hot to avoid breaking it, stripping it or both.

Is it difficult to replace the 02 sensor?

o2 sensors are easy u can borrow or buy the modified socket or use a wrench to remove the o2 sensor as to the intake manifold thats a little more work u have to move and remove alot of the components on top of engine if u want to check and see how hard it will be buy a chilton or haynes auto repair manual about $19 gives detail breakdowns on how to repair ur vehicle or go to library in reference section borrow auto repair manual that covers ur car will show how its done

Service Engine soon light on - diagnostic code says o2 sensor. What is an O2 sensor and is it hard to replace

You'll need to give us the specific code, in the format P0xxx. Just saying "O2 sensor" doesn't mean anything. It could be the heater circuit, fuse, o2 sensor itself, etc. Changing an O2 sensor isn't too hard but you may not need to replace it/them.

Please report back with the code or look it up at http://www.check-engine-light.com
