My 6 month old Whirlpool side by side refrigerator model #ED5LVAXWOO Ice Make stopped making ice. I have now notice frost forming on the rear panel of the freezer and have noticed that some of the food items in the freezer were starting to thaw.

The evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.
Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help. Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the inside of the freezer at the bottom of the rear cover.
Sounds like the fan behind the rear freezer panel has stopped working, therefore no air flow over evaporator coils causing ice built up and no cooling on refrigerator side. easy fix
You are having a problem with one of the three main components of the the defrost system. Look into rear of your freezer to see if ice and frost is beginning to build up on the rear panel. If yes begin manual defrost by unplugging and remove contents of freeze. Even better send me the model number of your Whirlpool. That is how I tell you were the problem began most likely. Look around the door frame and inside the fresh food section sea Breeze
The non cooling is brought by the Expanded and Rapidly cooling air which keeps it cool is being blocked by the ice, and simultaneously being condensed by the temperature difference... The ice blocks its path and forms frost...but there is obviously air coming in contact with it...The problem is typically air is leaking in the fridge somewhere, make sure doors shut tight after cleaning the frost in the back panel...this should do it...:)
Replace your heater and thermostat behind the back wall of the freezer. the air will not flow from the freezer to the fridge because of all the forming ice. Also replace the defrost timer. take your model number into a local parts store and they can get you the parts. This is very common!!!!! But pretty easy to do.
You said, you got this whirlpool double door refrigerator for 4 years.
cost me
about 1.5k. the second year, right after warranty, the main brain is
down-the light panel in the refrigerator is off. whirlpool tech told me
to replace it will cost me 500, so you decide not to do it. Now you
have
bad frosting issue for 6 month. Inside the Refrigerator, the water keep
on dripping on side wall and glass drawer ceiling. In the freezer,
frosting all over each drawer, and the bottom drawer has too many
frosting and ice that i can hardly close the door. Last night, the
refrigerator section just don't get cold anymore, it shuts up by itself.
Help!! It is an very expensive refrigerator and ONLY 4 years old .
First,I think you need to have a new tech.
It sounds like you have either an air leak allowing out side air in and this causes the icing.
Or you may need some freon (coolant gas) .
If your freon pressure is low it can ice up.
Did that tech that was there check for a freon leak and also check the pressure of the freon in the lines???
You need to call a different tech and let him see what's happening.
Some company that is reliable!
Let me know what they do for you. God bless, Huuum please remember to leave a rating.
The presence of frost indicates that the dispenser(ice) probrably isn't
closing all the way once you get ice. This allows warm air to rise up,
condense and form frost. In all likelihood the solenoid that controls
the opening and closing is bad and needs to be replaced.
It has a defrost problem. Most likely cause would be the defrost thermostat which clips onto the evaporator behind the back panel in the freezer. Next most common would be the defrost timer. Third would be the defrost heater. Let me know if you want to try to test these parts. If so I will need the entire model # from the sticker in the fridge or on older models on a plate at the bottom front below the door.
If the frost build up is on the back panel of the freezer then it has a defrost problem which causes a no cool situation. Let me know more about this frost buildup and what you have done.
