I found another site that described the fix. On the bottom of the toaster, after removing the crumb tray, there is a screw in the middle that can be turned to adjust the sensitivity of the lift mechanism. Here's a link to the site http://www.automaticbeyondbelief.org/fixing.htm

I hope so (will try it out). I've had my AT-40 since 1976 and love it to bits. Part of the family, really! Suddenly gave up the ghost yesterday and reluctantly went out and bought a new one (Sunbeam, of course). But now I'm thinking I acted a bit rashly. Fingers crossed and thanks for the advice and links.

What is the difference between tha American vintage sunbeam toaster and the Australian one

Most likely, VOLTAGE. Australia uses different current than the USA. (230Volt vs 120Volt) Also this will have different plugs. There are adapters if you just have to use the "classic" one.

Adjust the screw on the bottom which adjusts the tension created by the heaters. If this doesn't work, "bump" it some to dislodge crumbs that may be inferfering with the trip lever for the thermostat.
If nothing works, try kitchenmade usa or toaster central who both work on and fix vintage toasters.

There is an adjustment knob on the bottom turn 180 degrees counter clock wise and try again if still doesn't, drop repeat till successful.

My vintage sunbeam toaster just quit working. It is special to me because it belonged to my late sister. It's the kind that lowers the bread automatically. Now it will not do anything. Is there...

Yes you probably can. I would check in side to see if a wire may have just broke off. when old wires get brittle they sometimes pop off. check the wireing and of any fuse that may be in side. I bet there is still life in the unit still
