You need is an open slot for the drive, an available SATA slot / cord, and a SATA power. It may require you to go into BIOS, and in some cases a driver for the new drive. Don't forget the SATA drivers if you have XP.
If all the motherboard has is IDE connectors, then you can with an add in card. To do this you need to run the installation floppy during a fresh windows installation when it prompts for 3rd party scsi or raid drivers. I'd take the easy road & install a slave drive on the IDE or run an external hard drive in a usb port. Or the ultimate option, build a system using a board with sata on it. Prices are way down on hardware in general, but it's not going to stay that way.
Kinda strange. Not turning on indicates a hardware problem, you made software changes. If the software changes caused a problem, it would start, just not boot to windows. I would first tryy to reset the laptop. Unplug it and remove the battery, hold down the power button for 60 seconds, then try again. If still no go, start removing hardware one at a time, hard drive, rem, wireless card, dvd rom. You may have a bad hard drive. Your pc should boot to bios if there is no hard drive installed. If that happens, run a diagnostic on your hard drive from your bios. Let me know if you need anything else. seth
Hi, if you get a 2.5" sata harddrive encloser / cradle and take out the laptop hd and put it into the encloser or cradle he will be able to access his project.Another option is to take the laptop to a repair shop and ask them to reclaim his project .
