That's easy. Take out the cartridges. Your black cartridge is number 21 i guess, so all you need to do is take off the label on your cartridge. You will see a single hole. You need a syringe and needle to do the refill. Put 10ml of black ink in the syringe, put the needle in the hole. You will feel a slight resistance- that is normal, there is a sponge inside, nothing you can damage. Pour the ink. Usually, cartridges are not entirely empty, so if ink begins to emerge from the hole, or starts leaking from the print head, just extract a ml or two, wipe the cartridge with some tissue and voila!
Now don't be surprised if the printer keeps telling you the cartridge is empty, that is normal- neither the printer or your computer can know that you have refilled your cartridge. The ink level will appear only when you put in a new cartridge. You can try and find in printing preferences how to shut down the warning, or you can just ignore it ;)
Hope that helps!

SOURCE: refilling inkjet cartridge!!

Have you purchased a refill kit yet ? If so there are great instructions with them. but generally there is a rubber cap on the top of the cartridge you remove. You draw the ink into a syringe and slowly inject it into the cartridge. Slowly is the key. Replace the plug and tape over it with the tapes they provide. Its important you get the sealing done right or air will enter the top and the ink will flow out of the cartridge into your printer.
It's really not hard at all, just follow the procedures carefully and in 10 minutes you will have the cartridge functioning again.
Just follow the directions, you will be fine.

SOURCE: hp 3550 printer color cartridge printing but black not printing

try to clean the black cart :

# Hold the cartridge upside down, with the bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper towel.
# Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead horizontally in one direction only (left to right).
# Continue doing this until it looks clean.
# Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure the ink is flowing.
# Next, look inside the printer and locate the carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not installed at this point.

1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the contacts at the back of the carrier.
2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than one swab.

# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap them correctly into the printer.

SOURCE: Just installed refilled black ink cartridge on hp

By using refilled cartridges you will always have this problem. Each cartridge has a chip that lets the printer know when it is full or empty. By pressing the ok button you may be able to clear this message. However, most of the time you can still be able to print and ignore the message.

Can I use a replacement cartridge instead of the HP in the J3680

The contacts on your HP may be dirty or bent...meaning, your printer may not be able to communicate with the cartridge. I am running into the same issue with my HP Color Laser Printer, where the Magenta cartridge is reported as empty.
Wipe the contacts on the cartridge with a clean, lint free towel. Do not use water...if anything a little iso-propyl alcohol on the towel and whip the contacts on the cartridge and on the spring contacts on the printer side. Check to make sure the spring contacts are actively contacting the cartridge.

I use refillable for my HP J3600 cartridges and I am getting an error message. Is this the problem. I cleaned the cartridges and I still get this message.

If you refill the cartridge when it close to out of ink.
The printer knows that certain cartridge is out of ink.
If you have another cartridge, you can install it in the printer.
Let the printer to cycle.
Remove and install back the other cartridge.
The printer would now read the cartridge as a new cartridge.
You could also turn off the printer and unplug it from the outlet.
Wait at least 30 minutes for the printer to reset.
Plug back in printer.

hi
try cleaning th contacts of the black cartridge and the contacts of the black cartridge carrier with a wet towel
if that is not working you need to replace black cartridge because the printhead of your cartridge has been overheat due air left in tha cartridge

Hp black cartiedge is low on immediately

When you refill a cartridge, the printer will keep warning you that it is empty- a message pops out that says "low ink". That is because the printer sees the cartridge by it's serial number. The printer can't know that you have refilled the cartridge, so it keeps saying that it is empty. Once you put in a new cartridge, it will display the cartridge as full again.

Refilling ink cartridges

hp74a.jpg HP #74 Cartridge Refill Instructions
Black cartridge

Instructions
1. Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate a spill.
2. Peal off the top label. hp74b.jpg
3. Fill the syringe with 20ml. of black ink.
4. Very S-L-O-W-L-Y inject ink into any hole (they all go to the same sponge, HP just used the same color mold for the black ink cartridges).
5. When finished, replace the top label or leave it off (it will make no difference in the printing).
6. Replace the cartridge and run 1 - 3 cleaning cycles as per printer instructions.
Or print the following pages:
http://www.refillinstructions.com/black.htm for Black

For best results, leave cartridge in printer for 8 hours after refilling so the ink can saturate the entire sponge.
A Refill Kit should include Ink plus the following:
One 30cc Syringe
