WD Element 1 TB on Windows 98SE system

Where can I get a usb2 driver that runs a WD Element 1 TB external USB Disk under Windows 98SE

  • rjt4054 Mar 03, 2010

If I did not need Windows 98SE I would upgrade. SO the solution has nothing to do with the problem. Windows 98SE is running on a 32bit machine.

You can NOT access 1TB under Win 98SE, It is unable to "Address" that much memory, it is simply mathematically impossible. You have to upgrade to a system that CAN address that much memory, such as a 32 Bit system. better still a 64 bit system.

IT doesn't matter it is mathematics NOT the machine the CODE the software is written IN...There is NO WAY Win 98SE will address 1TB of anything, It is just that simple.. It is the CODE NOT the machine you need 32 BIT code Win98SE is ONLY 16 BIT OK.

Hello, I'm trying to track down a USB driver for a Freecom FHD-1 external drive to run under Windows 98se (for the moment). Have checked freecom.com for drivers but am a bit dizzy after...

Some info on 98se and USB issues. You should not need a usb driver if the usb port in your computer is already functioning properly. The only inconvenience you will have is your drive will work at the slower speed provided by the usb 1.1 standard.

The link below describes step by step installation of your drive in 98se

WD external HDD my passport 500 Gb . It's not correctly installed into my PC - PC can't find driver. System Windows XP

Maybe it's a power issue. Try a shorter usb cord or try a different usb port. If you are using an usb hub, try to connect the hard disk straight to the pc.

Problem with Accessing Western Digital WD My Passport Essential SE 1 Tb external driver, please guide to resolve problem with windows XP

Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management Then go into Disk Management. Hopefully you will see a drive with a capacity of about 480 GB (plus or minus), that's your disk.
Right click on it and select change drive letter and change the drive letter to something that isn't in use.
If that doesn't work or it doesn't show up, go into the Device Manager from the Computer Management screen and see if there is anything under disk drives with a yellow or red symbol next to it. If so, right click it, select uninstall, then unplug the disk drive and plug it back in.

How do I disconnect (uninstall) a WD External Hard Drive from my computer? I am using a WD 3200AAK WD External Hard Drive and want to install a 1 TB WD External Hard Drive. I would like to use the old one...

External hard drives don't need any program installed on your computer to run. Your operating system Windows, Linux should handle it as soon as you plug the usb in your computer. The programs included in your WD external hard drive are tools to backup your data.

If you try to hook up your hard drive to a Windows prior to XP, maybe your computer will not handle it.

It is always safer to safely remove your drive using the green arrow icon in the lower right corner of your screen. This way, the drive is shut down properly and you minimize chances of fails when you plug it again on another computer.

Hope this helps!
