It might need to be formatted, right click on the computer and click on manage, click on disk management and format the disk.

Click start, right click computer, click manage after a window opens up click disk management on the left side. Is the hard drive showing up in that list? If it is click start then click computer and see if its showing up. From that disk management menu you can right click and do what you want with the drives. If its still not showing up i recommend getting a external hard drive case. They never served me wrong, thats what i use to put old hard drives in. With a hard drive case you can do everything you can do with it in the computer.

If you don't want to format it and loose all your data. You could always explore it in disk management and backup everything that you need then format it. After you format it just put the stuff back on. With a external hard drive case you don't need to format it to use it.

Not recognised windows vista

You have to go to control panel, adminstrative tools, storage and initialize the drive. However the way it sounds, the drive might have an issue, could be the cable or the usb port

Can't get the Cd/Dvd drive to work, Windows vista doesn't show it in the device manager, I have a n HP Pavillion dv6500 notebook around 3 yrs old

If the device manager does not recognise the drive then it has most likely failed. You should be able to remove the drive, one screw on the underside, and reboot, Once you have done this power down, reseat the drive and power up again. If the Plug and Play software doe snot recognise it then you need a new drive.

PC not recognising Iomega Prestige 320gb usb portable hard drive. I've connected it all up, disconnected, reconnected, rebooted the computer, but the drive is just not recognised and does not show up in...

Does the drive show in Device Manager? Right click on 'My Computer' and select properties, the open device manager.. Navigate down to Disk Drives or Hard Drives, click on the plus sign and see if your drive is listed. If it is, then right click on the drive name and open properties for the drive. Click on the 'Volumes' tab and hit the 'Populate Button'. It may be the disk just needs initialising, then reformatting before you can use it. If it does need initializing, a wizard should appear to guide you through the process!
If this doesn't solve your problem, try using a different USB cable and/or USB ports on your computer, and ensure to unplug all other USB devices other than keyboard & mouse.

My external buffalo hard drive is recognised in device manager, but can't access through explorer... any ideas please? I am running Vista and the last time I accessed the hard drive was doing a backup...

Your drive could have errors due to the aborted task. You need to format your drive. Go to Computer Management, if your drive is recognized in device manager t will show up in the Computer Management, there you can format it. Good luck.

PC not recognising the slave drive

Assuming you set it as slave or cable select as required by the motherboard, you have to first get the bios to recognise it press F2 or Del on boot up to enter cmos and then there should be an option to auto detect drives, save settings for a re boot. When in windows, right click on my computer icon and select manage>disk management and then your drives will be listed, right click on the slave drive and select format or set as active and it will then show, but only 137GB may show depending on the bios version.

How to make Vista to recognize my old Hard drive

There are normally only two ways to get vista to recognise large drives and that is to format it within windows by way of right click my computer then click manage and then highlight your harddrive right click and select format. The other way is if your drive isnt being recognised because of the bios and needs updating, as most bios chips did when upgrading to vista.
