My AVIC-N2 powers on okay and the motorized screen comes out fine but the screen is BLANK (what a surprise?)
Pioneer knows about the screen ribbon problem and they used to offer free replacements...Do they still offer this service??
Thanks
Yes they will replace the ribbon cable for free for only one time. but if you did the bypass mod they will unmod it and charge you $200 for doing it. In that case you better of send it to that guy Rich with Same Day Audio Service on Ebay, he will fix it with his company manufactured milspec ribbon cable for I think $85. His cables are much higher quality than Pioneer's and come with a free lifetime warrantee if you have it perform by him or you can purchase the cable from him and put it in by yourself but he won't guarantee it if you do. It not very hard to do if you are a little bit technical incline. I bought a few cables and replaced them myself with the Ribbon Cable Exhausted Tutor Guide on AVIC411.com, but I have figured out a much easier way to do it. Let me know if you need help. Goodluck to you.
On the head unit there is a Pioneer silver hologram sticker that cover a small rectangle hole, if you remove the sticker then you would see an emty spot for a component. I believe the silkscreen print say R197, to bypass you just drop a little solder in to connect the two leads together. If you are able to watch video and access full navi functions then it probably bypassed or you can visually check it. Some people disassemble the unit and bypassed it from the inside to keep the sticker intact to keep their warrantee, some even buy new sticker to replace the one they peeled off, but when you send it in for ribbon cable replacement Pioneer will perform bench test and they will know that bypassed have been done, they will un-do the bypassed and charge $200 for it. I guess that is how they try to get some $ back on a service that they suppose to honor for free. How do I know if they would find out even if you perform the bypassed internally? Because the Avic N1 does not have the sticker option the only way to do it is to disassemble all the way to the board and do it. And Pioneer find out if it is done or not on the N1 when they replace the ribbon cable on with out seeing it( to replace the ribbon cable only required 1/4 of the disassembly compare to bypass procedure that require taking it completly apart. I hope that would help. You can call me at 801-414-4566, I will do what I can.
Let me know if you need more info on the easier way to disassembly and replace the ribbon cable.
I think it probably not bypassed yet, but can you check to see if any screw is missing or is there any damage to the screws' heads. Rookies tech usually leave marks, it is very hard not to. When you send it use USPS Priority Mail small flat rate box $9.00 plus confirmation $0.65, it is the cheapest and fastest. If Pioneer suggest some thing that cost money let me know . I can tell if it is neccessery or not. The N2 usually go for $500 and up depend on condition and accessories. You got a super deal. Keep me posted, Hogan.

Copy and paste this.
It is information for replacement of the flexcable and appears to be an upgrade.
Hi. I just re-installed a replacement ribbon cable for this same Pioneer unit. I tell you that without the exploded diagram from Pioneer I'd be lost. Anyway, you have to remove the assembly in order to get the cable out and replace it. Get with me and I'll show you how to disassemble your unit.

Hi! i have read and searched everywhere. not much info on my unit itself but , i am about to do a ribbon replacement for this unit. just ordered it for $15plus 10 ship. what id like to do is get some info on removal. have any helpful advice? and also important is do u possibly know if i will need to solder? i have read/been told both yes and no. so far i have removed one side of ribbon cable(side that connects to flipdown face). looks to have an IDC socket connector which is held onto flipdown with 2 metal/bend clips. looks like the ribbon cable just sticks on(or with adhesive?) to IDC socket connector? as for the other side that goes into the unit i am not sure. from what i have read it should just slip in there somewhere, or do i have to disassemble parts of the front of main unit? well thanx in advance hope u can help!

Hogan:
I bought this unit in USED condition and I have no idea if the "bypass" you are talking about was done by the previous owner...How can I verify the "bypass" was done or not?? I'm pretty knowledgeable technically and I can open the unit to pock around inside , if I have to....What should I be looking at fo r the "bypass"??
Thanks for the AVIC411 site...I will look in there too..
YALMER :
The link you posted does not work for me...You can email me directly: [email protected]
Thanks again for your help
Thank you so much for your help and comments...I did call Pioneer and indeed they told me to send the unit in for the ribbon replacement....I also look on the underside of the unit and indeed the silver sticker is on and looks intact....
Is anyone selling the ribbon cable replacement instead of sending the unit to Pioneer??
I also noticed that most of the functions on the front detachable panel do not work or at least nothing happens when I press them...For example the turn-off function does not work... all the buttons light up but that's about it...Only the flip function seems to turn the clock on (when the display is closed)...The OPEN button and the flip button work fine.
I never had the unit working or installed in my car so I have no idea if the "bypass" was installed or not...I bought it to fix it along with the hide-away brain unit...Hopefully I can fix it cheaply otherwise I will sell it on eBay for parts....Best regards
Bill K.
