Sounds like your cousin could be right. You probably have a dirty laser lense. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4119308-clean_lense_cd_or_dvd_player which explains in detail how to clean the lense. Unfortunately if after cleaning the laser lense, your drive still will not work, you will need to purchase a new one. You can get one at www.impactcomputers.com for a good price. Let me know if you need anymore help.

First try a few fixes:

  • Clean the lenses with a cotton swab and robbing alcohol
  • uninstall the driver from -->control panel -->system -->device manager then restart the computer and wait for it to be reinstalled.
If both of those fail then you can search online for a replacement Disk drive or just the laser ( which ever is cheapest). you will need a small screw driver. just open the disk drive as if you were inserting a CD and remove the cover.

Hi,

insert a disc cleanser first then play it several times, maybe the laser contained a dusts. mostly original disc driver are choosy, they can not read pirated disc..if your disc driver still not working, your laser might be defected.pull out your laser then change a new one..i hope this may help you,

My ps2 wont read silver back disks. how do you fix it

Hi there!
When your PS2 starts to have problems reading silver backed discs you could be experiencing one of 2 different problems:
  1. Your laser or disc is dirty (clean off your disc with a soft cotton cloth, and clean the laser in your PS2 with a cd drive cleaning cd)
  2. The laser in your PS2 is going, you will need to take it into a shop to have it repaired, replace the laser or disc drive yourself (this will void the warranty if you have one) or get a new or different PS2.
Hope this helps!

Tower fell over and the disc wont work now?

Its possible because the laser inside of the disc drive is sensitive to motion. The console dropping could cause the laser to go bad because the "eye" goes bad. The part that reads the disc. Depending on what game console your talking about, try getting another know good working drive and replace it to verify that the original is bad.

Game wont read says put disc in xbox 360 but i am using xbox 360 also it says its a dvd not game just wont let me play no more

If you have recently tried to mod your Xbox 360 then you did not get the drive key installed correctly. Otherwise the laser lens is either dirty/ starting to weaken. You can either replace the laser lens in the disc drive, try to clean it, try the POT tweak or replace the whole disc drive. Keep in mind if you replace the disc drive you will need to swap the PCBs or the drive keys. Hope this helps.

My PS3 wont redcognize discs i put in a disc and it will not do anything it used to read ps2 ps3 and bluray discs but it wont read anything and ive never used it online

The laser in the drive is probably going bad. Use a can of air and blow some into the drive so that way your making sure no specs of dust or dirt are on the laser. If after you do that it still won't play any discs, then you know the laser is bad so you can either replace the laser or replace the whole drive which is easier to do.

PS3 won't read discs of any kind at all. We have an old PS3 (husband says the biggest one) that was the first kind to come out. Recently we have found that the PS3 no longer reads any of our games or DVDs....

the laser has gone bad in the dvd drive. You can either replace the laser if you know how to get into the dvd drive or just replace the dvd drive itself. You can find them on Ebay at a decent price.

My PS3 will not play games, only movies.

Short answer its a ..... to fix. Theres multiple lasers in the disc drive that actually read the disc. The blue laser failed. Replacing the drive wont work unless you can reprogram the eeprom chip (or is it nand?) At any rate its just better to upgrade to a new console.

My ps3 wont read any disk.

Hi, the problem you have is an internal one, the drive laser head does not seem to be reading the discs you may need to get the console replaced, or get the laser head cleaned, it may be a dirty laser head or a damaged one. If you can replace the laser head or drive yourself then it may work out cheaper for you.

Hope this has helped.

Computer wont read disc

First thing I would do is clean the laser lens. You can purchase a CD/DVD laser lens cleaning disc at most big box retailers, or online very inexpensively. They often come bundled with a disc cleaner too, so you can keep your discs error free. 9 times out of 10 that is the problem, if it has been working up until now. You may also want to look at your hardware configuration in the control panel, under system > hardware > device manager, and make sure there are no hardware or driver issues with that drive.
