I have a Krups type 964 espresso maker. It's at least 10 years old and has always worked like a charm. Recently, however, no matter what adjustments I make - less coffee, more coffee, tighter fastening of the coffee thing - at some point during the pulling of the shot, coffee and steam ends up running out the sides, or shooting out the sides sometimes. I have cleaned the area - including the threading - several times, nothing helps. Recently it got so bad that it more or less became super pressurized, no espresso came out, and it felt as if the machine was on the verge of exploding. What's the deal?
The seal on the filter is broken? its a replacement part
Try removing the screw that holds the metal filter in place, and remove the filter plate. Then clean the accumulated coffee dust inside. Once clean, reassemble and all should work fine. I have to do this every 6 months or so once the machine got to be about 12 years old.
