Download "Testdisk & PhotoRec 6.10" from www.download.cnet.com
and follow the instructions. TestDisk is a powerful data recovery utility. It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally erasing your Partition Table).
Once you install the program, you can find step-by-step instructions in google. This program is really easy to use and will fix your hdd.

SOURCE: Seagate external HDD used on

It may be that you need a driver for that particular external hard drive.

Visit: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/ and search for your specific model and see if a driver for 64-bit Windows 7 is available.

Windows xp will not recognise the seagate freeagent desktop drive

Assuming you have tried other usb ports and had no change, remove the usb connection, then go back into device manager and select the usb controller, right click and select delete as this will erase any input driver the usb port recognises. Restart the pc and then the controller should be reinstalled automatically as it sounds as though the controller has become corrupt for some reason. Go back into device manager and check there are no exclamation marks, reconnect the drive and see if it's recognised.

I have a seagate Freeagent Go 500gb and suddenly it is not recognized by my laptop.

Try with another PC, If still not recognising, then You have to open the Casing of your external drive. If you have any Warrenty remaining for this Drive, then let company people fix this. if no warrenty then Remove the HDD from the casing, Connect HDD to the PC with another External casing, and backup your Data. If no ditection with this method, then your HDD is Dead. Keep finger crossed best of luck

ST300003U2 hard drive powers up ok, power light on, message on pc "usb device not recognised " .one of the usb devices has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it.

Try to plug it in to another PC to see if you get the same message. See if you can run a scan disk on it from Windows to see if it's bad or going bad too.

To be honest, device not recognised is a bad sign. :(

Drive not being recognised by any computer.

USB drives do pack it in. You have answered your own question, I think. Three computers cannot recognize it, must be the drive.
A fall can happen and not leave a mark. A fall to the floor is like a bomb going off for a hard drive. It sounds as if the motor is jammed.

Seagate external hard drive - would not open

TRY THAT EXTERNAL DRIVE IN OTHER PC AND CHECK IF IT IS RECOGNISED THERE, BECAUSE IF IT IS NOT RECOGNISED THERE ALSO THEN LIKELY YOUR CASING IDE CONNECTOR *** CONVERTER HOUSING HAS PACKED UP.
