First check the AV audio/video wires to determine if you have SD or HD wires. If you have 3 plugs (red, white, and yellow) then you will get standard definition (SD). If there is 6 wires (2 red, white, yellow, blue, and green) then you can connect High Definition (HD) and you can also connect SD as well. Now what you need to look @ if you have the wires with 6 ends (component HD AV wire), is on the part where you plug into the back of the Xbox 360, there is a switch on the box that is on the wire. It should say "TV" and "HDTV". If you have the component wires hooked up (5 wires) then select "HDTV" if you have only the 3 wires (red white yellow) for SD hooked up switch it to "TV". That is the first thing to check. The next thing to check is the way the wires are hooked up. If connecting HD, you very easily could've mixed up the 2 red wires, 1 is video and the other is audio. The way to determine which is video and which is audio is, for video, the actual plug itself is gray with a stripe of color which indicates where it goes on your tv, the audio plugs are solid white or red. And remember that the yellow plug is not used for HD setup. If you have a Xbox 360 that has the HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) input, then I would recommend using that to hook up your console. With the HDMI its only 1 wire to hook up and is extemely easy to set up. The HDMI wire transfers audio and video all in 1. There is only spot it can fit into, and its located right next to where you plug in the AV wire on the console. To me, the HDMI is "cleaner" looking b/c its only 1 wire.

How should I hook up my xbox to the back of the television using the red, white, and yellow wires? It is hooked up but I am not getting any audio. Thank you.

First make sure your video cable is set to TV not HDTV

Then plug the 3 RCA cables into the color coded slots on the TV. Make sure you aren't using the red cable from the component RGB but are using the red cable for sound (next to the white one).

Then, if you still have no picture, start the console using the controllers Xbox button and hold "Y" and "RT" until the console restarts. this will reset the video settings on the 360 to default.

Follow this guide if you get confused:

and for the video reset about halfway down the page:

Are you trying to use HD? Component cables or HDMI? Component cables limit you to 720p. It's possible that your old TV doesn't support 720p or there is something wrong with the jacks. What sort of connections do you have?

You may need to change your HD settings on the back of the console ( HD setting is actually on cord ) I had that issue when I first went online w/360 . If that does not help u know X box costumer support will repair any damaged system prob. no cost and does'nt take as long as they say.

We turn the tv and xbox on but there is no picture. We can hear the xbox power up and the tv works otherwise, but no visual for games.

is there sound? check the connections in the back of the tv. if you get red lights on the xbox, then it means a cable is loose some where. check the av swith on the av cord connected to the 360.

If it was hooked to a flat screen it was most likely on high def. There is a switch on the connection to the tv to make it work on a regular defination tv. Just slide the switch over to regular and it should work. Hope this helps.

HOOKING UP XBOX 360 TO HDTV

You have to use the regular red and white cords(not the yellow) and u have to use all 3 hd cords. If ur tv doesnt have a place to put the cords in, then it isnt HD. Also on the plug connecting to the 360, there is a switch that has HD and regular, switch it to HD. hope this helped.

Sound but no picture

On some av cables for the Xbox 360 there is a switch on the cable itself where it plugs into the Xbox that must be in the correct position. I hope this helps you.

No picture

with the x box 360 it defaults to 1080p and this model does not support that resolution. connect xbox with composite cables and go into x box menu and lower resolution to 1080i and source tv back to original connection and should have picture

Xbox 360 stretched screen out and cannot fix it now

Have you checked the aspect ratio?? May be that when the kids had the X-Box hooked up they simply changed the aspect to zoom.
