DVD drive cannot read DVD

U could install another cd/dvd rom like a toshiba rom. It works!

Do you mean you are trying to INSTALL a program that you bought and your CD/DVD drive is not reading it? If this is what your problem is first check so see if the laptop is identifying your CD/DVD drive? Open up computer and see if you can see the CD/DVD drive if it's not there you need to install drivers for it. If you do see it then you might be using the wrong media for the CD/DVD drive or you just got a bad disc.

try other known good windows installer. if it boot, then the problem is in xp installer, if it not. try other external cd-rom drive. also be sure the disc rom drive are dvd rom drive because a cd rom drive cannot read dvd disc but a dvd rom drive can read cd rom disc installer

Make sure you have the most current driver installed for that model. Go to IBM website and download, install. Once installed, try reading the disk again. That usually solves the problem.

And - all CD/DVD drives don't recognize all CD/DVD's - lots of different formats. Check the documentation for that drive to see which formats it can read.

Have you tried using an disc optical lens cleaner? Try that first. Unfortunately, these things do just quit sometimes, just like Hard Drives. You may have to just resort to using external usb drive or replace the internal drive.

There are chances that the installation CD is faulty itself. If it is the original manufacturers installation CD, and appears to be free of scratches and smudges, this is most likely not the case. I would insert a combination of at least one other software CD and one recordable CD in the CD drive of your computer CD/DVD drive to see if these discs are being scanned, read, and show data on those CDs. We want to pinpoint the problem, to make sure that the hardware failure of CD Drive is not to blame, but it could be.

A Disc can spin around in an optical drive, and have laser read issues, and still end up being faulty, and eventually need to be replaced.

If you determine that you need a new Printer installation CD/DVD, and all other data discs work fine in that optical drive, you can download printer driver software directly from the manufacturers web site.

If you provide me all the model and manufacturer details of your new printer, I can locate this direct download link for you, and provide that to you.

the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.

This is not a driver problem. It is almost certainly a problem with yourdvd/cd player. If it is reading dvd's, then it means that the driver is installed. You will have to take your laptop in and possibly get the cd/dvd player replaced.

Will it read any CD or DVD or just not is particular one? If it is just this one, download the software directly from vendor website.

Yes, you can install the cd with the Nero Software in the new Laptop, and you will be able to write CDs or DVDs, but if you have a combo only you will only be able to write/burn CDs but read DVDs no problem.
