Re: inspiron 1501 charging problem
Should find out why the original charger stopped working in the first place... was it a faulty mother board really.
anyway if the ratings on the charger you bought are for that laptop indeed, then it should power up the laptop minus the battery. ofcourse if you put in charger minus battery, dont expect it to show the charging led..just try to power it on

del recognition circuit may have failed in charger , or could be fine central pin on charger plug or laptop plug has broken connection,it is used to tell laptop that this is genuine dell charger. If you remove battery will laptop work off charger.if does then definitely one of the three problem possible . for first only soln try another dell charger first, often has to be one to suit your model ,common dell problem ,if then work and charge battery ,you will need to replace charger as recognition circuit failed. If either of last 2 can repair but need to pull apart repair broken connection ,or open up laptop and check power connection and repair connection . If you remove battery will laptop work off charger.if does the definately one of the three problem possible . for first only soln try another dell charger first, often has to be one to suit your model ,common dell problem ,if then work and charge battery ,you will need to replace charger as recognition circuit failed.
Check in BIOS and see whether its recognised there..If its not, it could be the Motherboard which is the culprit here...if system is Out of Warranty, and its charging, then forget the recognising issue...other Contact Dell's Out Of warranty for repair options.Would suggest using Dell spares for the system than going with other 3rd party supported adaptors
If your old battery was doing the same (not charging), then is is because the charger is not charging the battery. Do you have a friend with a Dell laptop? Maybe you can use a borrowed charger to test and see if it will charge the batteries. To answer your question , no Dell does not have anything built in to prevent you from using a 3rd party battery. If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it. Thanks, Joe
